Rendition (2007)

Rendition is a 2007 drama film directed by Gavin Hood and starring Reese Witherspoon, Meryl Streep, Peter Sarsgaard, Alan Arkin, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Omar Metwally. It centers on the controversial CIA practice of extraordinary rendition, and is based on the true story of Khalid El-Masri who was mistaken for Khalid al-Masri.

The plot

In a suicide attack with an explosive belt in a town square in Morocco, a colleague of CIA analyst Douglas Freeman (Jake Gyllenhaal) and 18 other people are killed. The target was interrogator and torturer Abasi, but he is unharmed.

Egyptian-born Anwar El-Ibrahimi (Omar Metwally) lives in the US with his pregnant wife Isabella (Reese Witherspoon) and their young son. According to phone records the known terrorist Rashid has made a phone call to Anwar. Therefore he is suspected of being a terrorist too, and after returning to the US from a conference in South Africa, he is arrested and sent to a secret detention facility in Morocco (extraordinary rendition). He is not allowed to make any phone calls and Isabella is not informed. She travels to Washington and in spite of denials learns that Anwar has been arrested. Much to her anger and despair, she does not find out where he is and what the charges are.

For lack of more experienced staff, Freeman is assigned the task of observing the interrogation of Anwar by Abasi. It is accompanied by torture. After Freeman briefly questions and tortures Anwar himself, he is convinced of Anwar's innocence. However, his boss insists that the detention continues, justifying such treatments as necessary to save thousands from becoming victims of terrorism. Eventually Anwar confesses to have advised on how to make more powerful bombs, and to have been promised $40,000 in return. However, Freeman believes it is a false confession.

Without consent of his superiors he orders Anwar's release and lets him escape Morocco through a clandestine trip by ship to Spain.

Another story line is shown in parallel, but at the end of the film it turns out that all this happened before the suicide attack: Abasi's daughter Fatima has run away from home with her boyfriend Khalid (Moa Khouas), whose brother died in Abasi's prison. Unknown to Fatima, Khalid is a terrorist. He is the one who carries out the suicide attack with Abasi as target. At the town square Fatima begs him not to do it, arguing that the target is her father. After removing the pin of his detonator he hesitates, and is therefore killed by the organizers of the attack. As a result he releases the handle of the detonater, and the bomb explodes, killing Fatima also.

The phone call by Rashid is not explained in the film (just that phones are sometimes exchanged, and that in South-Africa, while Anwar's phone was off, there had been a call to it from an unknown person. Possibly, the call at the beginning of the movie that Anwar receives from an unknown caller was that call, made by mistake, or a wrong number).

For the scenes of Abasi's private life it is not always clear to which storyline they belong, that before or after the explosion. Abasi learns about Fatima's death only a week later.

The real person

Khalid El-Masri (born June 29, 1963) is a German citizen who was detained, flown to Afghanistan, and interrogated and tortured by the CIA for several months as a part of the War on Terror, and then released without charge. This extrajudicial detention was apparently due to a misunderstanding that arose concerning the similarity of the spelling of El-Masri's name with the spelling of suspected terrorist al-Masri (the names are spelled the same way when using Arabic script).

Amazing Grace (2006)

Directed by Michael Apted about the campaign against the slave trade in 18th century Britain, led by famous abolitionist William Wilberforce, who was responsible for steering anti-slave trade legislation through the British parliament. The title is a reference to the hymn "Amazing Grace" and the film also recounts John Newton's writing of the hymn.

The tag line (in US publicity material) is "Behind the song you love is a story you will never forget."

The film begins with Wilberforce severely ill and taking a holiday in Bath, Somerset, with his cousin, Henry Thornton. It is here that he is introduced to his future wife, Barbara Spooner. Although he at first resists, she convinces him to tell her about his life. The story flashes back 15 years to 1782, and William recounts the events that led him to where he is now. Beginning as an ambitious and popular MP, William was persuaded by his friend William Pitt, Thomas Clarkson, Hannah More and others to take on the dangerous issue of the British slave trade which led him to become highly unpopular in the House of Commons amongst the Members of Parliament representing vested interests of the trade in the cities of London, Bristol and Liverpool.

Exhausted, and frustrated that he was unable to change anything in the government, William becomes physically ill, which brings the story back to the present day. Having virtually given up hope, William considers leaving politics forever. Barbara convinces him to keep fighting because if he does not, no one else is capable of doing so. A few days afterward, William and Barbara marry; and William, with a renewed hope for success, picks up the fight where he had previously left off, aided by Thornton, Clarkson and James Stephen. In time, after many attempts to bring legislation forward over twenty years, he is eventually responsible for a bill being passed through Parliament in 1807, which abolishes the slave trade in the British empire forever.

以英國推翻黑奴制度為背景的福音電影《奇異恩典》23日在全美的電影院正式上映。這部電影早已引起很多基督徒領袖的注意，估計會大受基督徒的歡迎。
電影《奇異恩典》（Amazing Grace: The William Wilberforce Story）的主角是19世紀初英國國會議員與改革家威廉斯. 威伯福斯（William Wilberforce），片中詳細描述了他推翻黑奴制度的行動。起初，國會中大部分議員對於威伯福斯的改革行動非常反感，處處藐視辱駡他。可是，作爲一 位虔誠福音派基督徒的威伯福斯並沒有輕易放棄，因爲他心中有一個信念——所有人都是神的兒女，所有人都是平等的。他甚至在國會激烈的辯論上對眾議員高聲宣 告：「記得，是上帝令所有人平等的。」

使威伯福斯的故事與《奇異恩典》這首世界著名的基督教詩歌拉上關係的另一位背景人物約翰.牛頓（John Newton）。 牛頓是《奇異恩典》的作詞者。他曾經是一位販賣奴隸到英國的商人，後來有一次在航海時遇上了大風浪，他禱告祈求神的憐憫，最後他平安了。自此以後，他把自 己獻上給主。

牛頓說：「只有上帝的恩典，才可能而且可以接受像他這樣一個無理、褻瀆、又做過奴隸交易的人，並使他轉變成爲神的孩子。」所以，他才寫出I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see的歌詞。

牛頓是威伯福斯小時候去過的教會的牧師。威伯福斯二十幾歲時有一次跟牛頓牧師談起應該要廢止奴隸制度的事，牛頓牧師首度公開承認自己年輕時也曾經參與奴隸交易事件，又鼓勵威伯福斯去要求英國國會廢除從非洲進口奴隸交易。
威伯福斯付上了健康的代價，花了20多年時間來來寫廢止條約法案草稿，並且收集奴隸交易犯罪的證據和390,000份簽字去支持他的訴訟。廢止條約在1807年終於被英國國會通過，也是《奇異恩典》的作詞者牛頓牧師去世的那年。

中國虎

看 了 《 中 國 虎 》 （ 李 克 威 著 ， 中 原 社 出 版 ） ， 好 小 說 ， 很 好 看 。
（ 怎 麼 每 本 書 都 「 很 好 看 」 ？ 很 簡 單 ， 因 為 若 不 好 看 ， 看 完 或 看 不 完 ， 就 都 不 提 了 。 值 得 提 的 ， 自 然 都 好 看 。 ）

《 中 國 虎 》 和 《 藏 獒 》 一 樣 ， 都 將 獸 當 人 來 寫 ， 寫 獸 的 獸 性 ， 都 以 人 性 的 標 準 來 落 墨 ， 所 以 看 來 很 有 趣 ， 開 始 會 略 有 不 慣 ， 看 下 去 ， 接 受 了 這 種 寫 法 ， 會 覺 得 頗 為 動 人 。

中 國 虎 在 動 物 園 中 ， 還 有 很 多 ， 好 幾 百 隻 。 把 老 虎 養 在 動 物 園 中 會 變 成 什 麼 樣 子 ， 《 中 國 虎 》 中 有 詳 細 的 描 述 ， 竭 盡 黑 色 幽 默 之 能 事 ， 有 超 乎 想 像 之 外 者 ， 足 證 看 好 書 之 樂 趣 無 窮 。

密陽 (Secret Sunshine) 2007

南韓女星全度妍以本片獲得第六十屆坎城國際影展最佳女主角，代表南韓角逐2008奧斯卡最佳外語片。

33歲的申愛帶著兒子來到了亡夫的故鄉密陽展開新生活。因為她深信這個地方有著神秘陽光。在這個小城裡，她開了一家鋼琴學院，企圖展開一個嶄新的人生。她遇到了宋康昊扮演的汽車修理行老闆，兩人展開了一段戀情....

《密陽》原意為陽光密集的地方，事實也正是如此，這裡是陽光強烈炙熱的地方。而電影《密陽》野心無窮，它要探測到藏在更深處的陽光。畫面一個一個拍下來，攝影機捕捉尋找著演員們含蓄內斂的表情、演技，以及炙烈的陽光。為了用自然光取代人工照明，劇組一看到陽光就急忙拍攝下來，特別是片尾的鏡頭，劇組選擇了非常耀眼的陽光，令人印象深刻。

 

在最後一個鏡頭可謂妙絕，陽光有照到的地方，亦會有照射不到的地方。寓意那位自稱愛世人的「神」，也不是顧及到每一個人。《密陽》的真正意思便帶出來了。

　「神的旨意無所不在，連這一束陽光的存在，都有其旨意。」開藥店的金太太，教會執事的妻子，對從首爾搬來的申愛這樣說。

　「這裡除了陽光之外，甚麼也沒有。」申愛把手伸進陽光裡，她的手的影子投在牆上，在陽光裡晃動，她說。

　這時，她對教會並沒有好感。

　看李滄東的《密陽》，心裡就像有些甚麼在晃動，有一條線若隱若現，可是怎樣也串不起來，不免有點著急。我在想，這麼一句平淡的對白，會隱藏著甚麼密碼在其中？或許，申愛看見的只是陽光，看不見甚他東西的存在。

　同樣的一束陽光，影片結尾申愛自己剪頭髮，掉在地上的一縷縷斷髮，在風的吹動下，微微晃動，其中有一縷被吹動了，在地面滾過，鏡頭隨著斷髮移到陽光照射的一個地方。一縷斷髮變成許多縷，風吹過，都在晃呀晃的，原來地上的黑影，並不是申愛的斷髮，而是那狗尾巴草的影子。

　髮與影，是密碼的另一個組合嗎？

　影片描述喪夫的申愛，帶著兒子從首爾搬到丈夫的出生地密陽生活。經營鋼琴學校的她，四出看地，意欲投資，卻因此惹來橫禍。綁匪綁架申愛的兒子，申愛卻沒有足夠的贖款，原來投資之說不過是騙人的，但兒子卻因此而被撕票。申愛從此崩潰，最後藉著宗教的力量重新振作。然而當申愛到監獄表示要原諒綁匪時，綁匪竟表示自己已得到上帝的原諒，申愛無法面對綁匪在自己原諒他之先，已得到上帝的寬恕，再次崩潰。

　如果宗教是陽光，申愛所看到的宗教，肯定與別人所看到的不相同。觀眾看到的申愛，又是怎樣的？

　鋼琴學校開張，喜歡申愛的宗燦替沒有得過任何獎項的她掛上獎狀，申愛說：「為甚麼要撒謊？」故事發展下來，我們卻知道她並不是個不撒謊的人：四出看地扮買家充大頭鬼、進唱片店偷碟也高招得要多偷一張唱片作掩護，以保證自己想的碟順利到手。回看她到密陽的理由，這個丈夫出生之地，固然是為了懷緬丈夫，另一個理由，申愛告訴弟弟：「因為這個地方沒有人認識我。」

　隱隱約約的對白與片段，我們不難重組出一個關於申愛的過去：偷竊、說謊、丈夫是個小混混，還有，父母與她那破裂的關係，搬到密陽，更大的理由是為了逃避及拋掉過去，然後得到一個新的生命，就如後來申愛決定信教一樣。但最終她失敗了，宗教不能使她重生，搬到一個陌生的地方亦不能。當她的車幾乎撞上感化院少女的一刻，過去的自己有如一個永不會癒合的傷口，她遠遠逃開不去觸碰，卻逃不了那種痛楚。

　當丈夫的出生地變成兒子的喪生地，我不信教，卻不由自主地想到，神的旨意在運行。那個看似與故事無關的感化院少女，申愛每次看見她，卻總會帶來震動。只是互相看見的兩人沒有太多交集，最後一次見面，是申愛從精神病院出來後往剪髮，操剪刀的正是那少女。兩人這時第一次正視對方——直如申愛第一次正視自己的過去。

　髮未剪完，申愛激動地離開，最後在院子裡望著鏡子自己動手剪，此前影片沉鬱凝滯得無法呼吸的氛圍，豁然變輕鬆了，鏡頭隨著剪下的頭髮移到陽光密集的地方，影子如斷髮般晃動。

American Gangster (2007)

American Gangster is an Academy Award-nominated 2007 crime film written by Steven Zaillian and directed by Ridley Scott. The movie stars Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. Washington portrays Frank Lucas, a real-life king pin from Harlem who smuggled heroin into the US on American service planes returning from the Vietnam War. Crowe portrays Richie Roberts, a detective attempting to bring down Lucas' drug empire.

Frank Lucas

Frank Lucas (born September 9, 1930 in La Grange, North Carolina and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina.) is a former heroin dealer, murderer, and organized crime boss in Harlem during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was particularly known for cutting out middlemen in the drug trade and buying heroin directly from his source in Southeast Asia. Frank Lucas is popularly known for smuggling heroin from Vietnam using the coffins of dead American servicemen, a claim his South Asian stripper, Leslie "Ike" Atkinson denies. He is the subject of the 2007 film American Gangster.

Early life

Frank claims that the incident that sparked his motivation into the life of crime was witnessing his 12 year old cousin's murder at the hands of KKK clansmen for apparently, "Reckless eyeballing," (looking at a Caucasian woman) in Greensboro, North Carolina. He drifted through a life of petty crime until one particular occasion he engaged in a fight with a former employer and, on advice of his mother, fled to New York. In Harlem he indulged in petty crime and pool hustling before he was taken under the wing by Black gangster Bumpy Johnson.

Criminal Career

After Bumpy Johnson's death, Lucas traveled around and came to the realization that to be successful he would have to break the monopoly that the Italian mafia held in New York. Traveling to Southeast Asia, he eventually made his way to Jack's American Star Bar, an R&R hangout for black soldiers. It was here that he met former U.S. Army sergeant Leslie "Ike" Atkinson, a country boy from Goldsboro, North Carolina, who happened to be married to one of Frank's cousins, which made him as good as family. Frank is quoted as saying, "Ike knew everyone over there, every black guy in the Army, from the cooks on up,"

Frank denies putting the drugs in the corpses of American soldiers. Instead he flew in a country-boy North Carolina carpenter over to Bangkok and:

" We had him make up 28 copies of the government coffins . . . except we fixed them up with false bottoms, big enough to load up with six, maybe eight kilos . . . It had to be snug. You couldn't have shit sliding around. Ike was very smart, because he made sure we used heavy guys' coffins. He didn't put them in no skinny guy's . . ." "

However, Atkinson, nicknamed "Sergeant Smack" by the DEA, has said he shipped drugs in furniture, not caskets. Whatever method he used, Lucas smuggled the drugs into the country with this direct link from Asia. Lucas said that he made US$1 million per day selling drugs on 116th Street. Federal judge Sterling Johnson, who was special narcotics prosecutor in New York at the time of Lucas' crimes, called Lucas' operation "one of the most outrageous international dope-smuggling gangs ever, an innovator who got his own connections outside the U.S. and then sold the narcotics himself in the street." He had connections with the Sicilian and Mexican mobs, holding an enormous monopoly on the heroin market in Manhattan. In an interview with Lucas he said, "I wanted to be rich. I wanted to be Donald Trump rich, and so help me God, I made it."

According to an interview dated August 14, 2000 with New York Magazine, Lucas relied on a tightly controlled crew called "The Country Boys. "They were a gay bunch of relatives that he liked. He preferred using relatives and men from his hometown in North Carolina because they were less likely to steal from him and were not used to the temptations of a "flashy city life." His heroin "Blue Magic" was 100% pure when shipped from Thailand and sold at 10% purity on the street. In this direct quote from the article, Lucas was worth "something like $52 million, " most of it in Cayman Islands banks. Added to this is "maybe 1,000 keys (kilograms), (2,200 pounds), of dope on hand" with a potential profit of no less than $300,000 per kilo (per 2.2 lb). Also in his portfolio were office buildings in Detroit, and apartments in Los Angeles and Miami. There was also "Frank Lucas's Paradise Valley," a several-thousand-acre spread back in North Carolina on which ranged 300 head of Black Angus cows, including a breeding bull worth $125,000.

Lucas rubbed shoulders with the elite in entertainment, politics, and crime, meeting Howard Hughes at one of Harlem's best clubs in his day. Though he owned several mink and chinchilla coats and other accessories, Frank Lucas much preferred to dress very casually and corporately as to not attract attention to himself. He fathered seven children, including a daughter, Francine Lucas-Sinclair, and a son, Frank Lucas, Jr. When he was arrested in the mid-1970s, all of Lucas' assets were seized.

Arrests and releases

In January 1975, Frank Lucas's house was raided in Teaneck, New Jersey by a task force consisting of 10 agents from Group 22 of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency and 10 New York Police Department detectives attached to the Organized Crime Control Bureau (OCCB). In his house authorities found $584,683. He was later convicted of both federal and New Jersey state drug violations. The following year he was sentenced to 70 years in prison. Once convicted Lucas provided evidence that led to more than 100 further drug-related convictions. For his safety in 1977 Frank Lucas and his family were placed in the witness protection program. In 1981 after 5 years in prison his 40-year Federal term and 30-year state term were reduced to time served plus lifetime parole. In 1984 he was caught dealing drugs again and was convicted for new drug violations and a parole violation. He was prosecuted and then later defended by detective Richie Roberts. He received a sentence of seven years and was released from prison in 1991.

Around 2005 Frank Lucas was involved in a car accident that broke his leg in two places and left him wheel chair bound. During an interview with MTV in November 2007 Frank talked about how, "I'll be up out of this doggone wheelchair, I guess, in about a month. I'll be glad to get rid of it, because I'm tired of this wheelchair."

Family

Frank married Julie, a homecoming queen from Puerto Rico (not Miss Puerto Rico as portrayed in the movie, American Gangster), and had seven children altogether. The two often bought expensive gifts for each other including the infamous jacket that she paid $125,000 for and another $40,000 cash for a matching hat. Julie was also jailed for her role in Frank's criminal enterprise spending five years behind bars.

One of his sons Frank Lucas, Jr is a respected HipHop artist who now with his father have launched the Frank Lucas brand. One of his daughters, Francine, entered the witness protection program with him in 1977 and has since started up a webpage Yellowbrickroads.org, with resources for the children of imprisoned parents.

Lions for Lambs (2007)

A platoon of United States soldiers in Afghanistan, a U.S. senator, a reporter, and a California college professor. With a title that alludes to incompetent leaders sending brave soldiers into the slaughter of battle, the film takes aim at the U.S. government's prosecution of the wars in the Middle East. The film was written by Matthew Michael Carnahan, and directed by Robert Redford. It stars Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, and Tom Cruise.

Atonement (2007)

An adaptation of Ian McEwan's critically acclaimed novel of the same name, directed by Joe Wright, and based on a screenplay by Christopher Hampton.

As the opening film of the 2007 Venice International Film Festival, Atonement made Wright – at the age of 35 – the youngest director ever to open this prestigious festival. The film also opened the 2007 Vancouver International Film Festival.

On January 22, 2008, the movie was nominated for seven Oscars for the 80th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) and Best Supporting Actress. The film won one Academy Award, for Best Original Score. On February 10, 2008, Atonement won two BAFTA Awards including Best Film of the Year at the 61st British Academy Film Awards.

Eastern Promises (2007)

A 2007 Canadian drama/thriller feature film directed by David Cronenberg. The screenplay was by Dirty Pretty Things writer Steven Knight. The film tells of a British midwife's interactions with the Russian mafia in London and stars Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts. The film has been noted for its unexpected plot twist and for its violence and realistic depiction of the Russian criminal underworld, including its use of tattoos.

The film has received a positive critical reception, appearing on several U.S. critics' "top ten films" lists for 2007. Eastern Promises has won several awards, including the Audience Prize for best film at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Best Actor award for Mortensen at the 2007 British Independent Film Awards. The film received twelve Genie Award nominations, three Golden Globe Award nominations, and Mortensen was nominated for Best Actor at the 80th Academy Awards.

According to the New York Daily News Viggo Mortensen studied Russian gangsters and their tattoos, and also consulted a documentary on the subject called The Mark of Cain. The tattoos that he wore were, according to the New York Daily News, so real that when he went into a Russian restaurant in London, a Russian couple sitting next to him became very quiet when they saw the tattoos on his hands, but since Mortensen could not speak ten words of Russian the mood of the restaurant changed back to normal. From that day on he washed off his tattoos when he went off the set.

When asked in an interview about the difference between "gun violence" and "knife violence", Cronenberg replied, "We have no guns in this movie. There were no guns in the script. The choice of those curved knives we use in the steam bath was mine. They're not some kind of exotic Turkish knives, they're linoleum knives. I felt that these guys could walk around in the streets with these knives, and if they were ever caught, they could say 'we're linoleum cutters'."

Thief in law

Thief in law (Russian: bор в законе, "vor v zakone"; plural thieves in law "vori v zakone") is a skilled worker, particularly a thief, within the Russian criminal world who satisfies certain requirements of the Russian criminal traditions.

History

Although Russia has long had criminals and bandits operating in the vast peripheral areas of the nation, during the disorder of the Revolution armed gangs proliferated until they were a very significant factor in society. This became known as the "vorovskoy mir" or "thieves' world".

As the Soviet Union was brought back to order, the NKVD nearly destroyed the criminal underworld in the Soviet Union. However, it was in the prison camps of Stalin that a new system arose, the vory v zakone.

The "thieves in law" formed as a society for mutual support within the prison camps, and adopted a system of collective responsibility, and swearing a code of "complete submission to the laws of criminal life, including obligations to support the criminal ideal, and rejection of labor and political activities." As an example, should a Vor (Вор) ever be unfortunate enough to be incarcerated in a prison camp, he would refuse to perform any labor, as the code would mandate that "Thine own prison thou shalt not make." The groups also organized their own courts around a code of thieves honor and tradition. Acceptance into the group was often marked by extensive tattooing (see Criminal tattoo). The tattooing would often be indicative of rank within the society and/or noteworthy criminal accomplishments.

After the breakup of the Soviet Union the vory assumed a leading role within the Russian criminal hierarchy (see Russian Mafia). They are given the title by other vory and in order to be accepted they must demonstrate considerable leadership skills, personal ability, intellect and charisma. Once accepted they must live according to the code. The penalty for violation of this code is often mutilation or death.

One famous Vor V Zakone is Vladimir Podatev who was appointed a member of the commission for human rights under the President Yeltsin, in spite of three previous felony convictions for murder, assault, and rape. Another famous vor is Vyacheslav Ivankov, notorious mobster with convictions in both the former Soviet Union and the United States.

The Thief's Code

Under the code of the vory, a thief must...

• Forsake his relatives -- father, brothers, sisters...
• Not have a family of his own -- no wife, no children; this does not however, preclude him from having a lover.
• Never, under any circumstances work, no matter how much difficulty this brings; live only on means gleaned from thievery.
• Help other thieves -- both by moral and material support, utilizing the commune of thieves.
• Keep secret information about the whereabouts of accomplices (i.e. dens, districts, hideouts, safe apartments, etc.).
• In unavoidable situations (if a thief is under investigation) to take the blame for someone else's crime; this buys the other person time of freedom.
• Demand a convocation of inquiry for the purpose of resolving disputes in the event of a conflict between oneself and other thieves, or between thieves.
• If necessary, participate in such inquiries.
• Carry out the punishment of the offending thief as decided by the convocation.
• Not resist carrying out the decision of punishing the offending thief who is found guilty, with punishment determined by the convocation.
• Have good command of the thieves' jargon ("Fenya").
• Not gamble without being able to cover losses.
• Teach the trade to young beginners.
• Have, if possible, informants from the rank and file of thieves.
• Not lose your reasoning ability when using alcohol.
• Have nothing to do with the authorities (particularly with the ITU, Correctional Labor Authority), not participate in public activities, nor join any community organizations.
• Not take weapons from the hands of authorities; not serve in the military.
• Make good on promises given to other thieves.

Juno (2007)

Juno is a 2007 drama film directed by Jason Reitman and written by Diablo Cody. Ellen Page stars as the title character, a sharp-tongued teenager confronting an unplanned pregnancy. Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman also star.

The film earned overwhelmingly positive reviews, making many critics' top ten lists for 2007. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and received three other Oscar nominations. A financial success, Juno made back its budget of $6.5 million in only 20 days, 19 of which the film was in limited release, and it has gone on to make more than 20 times that amount in North America alone.

The album features several songs performed by Kimya Dawson and her bands Antsy Pants and The Moldy Peaches, due to a suggestion by lead actress Ellen Page

"At one point, I [director Jason Reitman] asked Ellen Page before we started shooting, 'What do you think Juno listens to?' And she said, 'The Moldy Peaches.' She went on my computer, played the songs, and I fell in love with it. [Screenwriter Diablo Cody] and I discussed putting a Moldy Peaches song in it where the characters would sing to each other. I got in touch with Kimya Dawson of The Moldy Peaches and she started sending me her work, which was beautiful, and that became a lot of the soundtrack."^[2]

Initially, Reitman conceived of the character being a fan of glam rock, but rejected it as too inauthentic. He replaced this by scoring the film with Yo La Tengo, but got into contact with Dawson after listening to "Anyone Else but You." Dawson insisted on seeing the screenplay before allowing her songs to be in the film, and agreed by sending Reitman a package of her solo albums to review.

The Michael Cera/Ellen Page cover of "Anyone Else but You" was recorded on the last day of filming on the streets of Vancouver. During rehearsal, Dawson coached the duo on how to perform it and thought "'Aw, man, they sing it better than us.' They sing it so cute."

Delay No Mall 的 Kapok CD 角 落 。

一 九 九 六 年 ， 法 國 年 輕 銀 行 家 被 派 到 香 港 分 公 司 工 作 ， 金 融 風 暴 並 沒 有 令 他 退 縮 ， 反 而 到 了 二 千 年 科 網 高 峰 ， 卻 令 他 意 興 闌 珊 ， 發 現 自 己 的 興 趣 並 非 金 融 。 但 他 實 在 喜 歡 香 港 ， 就 這 樣 留 了 下 來 ， 他 進 入 了 Lomo 相 機 公 司 工 作 ， 將 Lomo 照 片 和 相 機 的 概 念 帶 給 更 多 人 知 道 ， 籌 備 一 些 小 型 迷 你 展 覽 。 與 此 同 時 ， 志 同 道 合 的 有 另 一 位 法 國 年 青 人 在 日 本 Lomo 公 司 做 同 樣 的 工 作 ， 兩 個 同 鄉 又 同 公 司 ， 雖 然 工 作 沒 有 正 式 直 接 往 來 ， 但 因 為 同 聲 同 氣 而 特 別 投 契 ， 就 因 為 這 份 默 契 ， 令 他 們 發 現 大 家 興 趣 相 若 。 住 在 香 港 的 年 輕 人 叫 做 Arnault Castell ， 他 個 人 喜 好 文 具 ， 對 紙 質 書 寫 工 具 都 十 分 考 究 ， 於 是 就 跟 日 本 Lomo 的 法 國 朋 友 合 力 代 理 Moleskin 的 文 具 ， 想 不 到 就 此 開 始 了 他 的 零 售 代 理 生 涯 。

Moleskin 反 應 理 想 ， Arnault 發 現 自 己 每 次 旅 行 或 回 鄉 都 在 買 東 西 ， 於 是 就 將 這 些 小 品 製 作 帶 來 香 港 ， 由 濕 濕 星 星 小 型 的 精 緻 文 具 品 牌 ， 到 手 製 法 國 瓷 器 （ Astier de Villatte ） 、 法 國 浴 室 用 品 、 法 國 做 的 香 薰 蠟 燭 ， 仿 如 法 國 的 親 善 大 使 。 這 幾 年 下 來 ， 他 在 香 港 結 識 了 不 少 本 地 的 朋 友 ， 有 些 是 藝 術 家 ， 有 些 是 雜 誌 編 輯 ， 有 些 是 傳 媒 人 ， 他 的 朋 友 都 在 天 后 大 坑 附 近 居 住 ， 因 為 Arnault 的 代 理 生 意 慢 慢 成 長 ， 也 需 要 覓 尋 一 個 辦 公 室 ， 朋 友 就 說 鄰 近 有 一 個 空 置 的 地 方 ， 不 如 看 看 ， 就 是 現 在 天 后 皇 龍 道 很 多 車 房 附 近 的 Kapok 。 我 問 他 為 甚 麼 把 店 子 叫 Kapok ？ 他 說 其 實 店 子 對 出 有 一 棵 很 大 的 榕 樹 ， 但 是 （ 榕 樹 的 英 語 ） Banyan Tree 已 成 為 那 個 精 緻 酒 店 系 列 集 團 的 名 稱 ， 不 能 用 ， 有 一 天 他 的 妹 妹 來 香 港 探 他 ， 他 將 這 個 想 法 跟 妹 妹 分 享 ， 妹 妹 說 不 如 就 叫 Kapok 吧 ！ Kapok 是 木 棉 樹 ， 一 樣 的 美 麗 。 我 也 曾 住 天 后 區 ， 但 天 天 經 過 的 大 榕 樹 卻 沒 有 引 起 我 甚 麼 注 意 ， 經 他 一 提 又 覺 得 很 難 得 ！

欣 賞 Kapok 的 還 有 G.O.D. 的 創 辦 人 ， 因 此 邀 請 Kapok 到 Delay No Mall 開 店 ， 規 模 比 天 后 的 店 小 得 多 ， 店 內 賣 T 恤 、 蠟 燭 及 法 國 音 樂 CD ， 較 接 近 時 尚 潮 流 。 Kapok 的 CD 選 擇 十 分 精 采 ， 雖 然 只 有 少 少 十 隻 八 隻 ， 但 品 味 一 流 。 Arnault 聽 到 我 這 麼 說 很 開 心 ， 「 人 人 都 在 網 上 下 載 音 樂 ， 我 還 賣 CD ， 有 點 不 切 實 際 ， 但 有 些 東 西 喜 歡 就 是 喜 歡 ， 不 受 時 代 淘 汰 。 」 我 喜 歡 Arnault 的 店 Arnault 的 選 擇 ， 就 像 一 個 小 小 的 法 國 角 落 。 三 月 起 他 將 會 代 理 法 國 DJ 紅 人 Kitsune 的 便 服 系 列 和 便 服 皮 鞋 ， 皮 鞋 都 由 Pierre Hardy 製 造 ， 就 像 是 十 五 年 前 的 A.P.C. 那 樣 精 緻 。
Kitsune 是 當 紅 DJ （ 連 卡 佛 去 年 北 京 店 開 幕 ， 就 重 金 禮 聘 Kitsune 表 演 ） ， 但 一 如 法 國 設 計 師 也 會 做 音 樂 一 樣 ， 做 音 樂 的 人 也 會 做 時 裝 ， 因 為 講 的 是 一 套 態 度 ， 看 似 Lacoste ， A.P.C. 的 便 服 ， 其 實 考 究 之 處 是 在 蘇 格 蘭 織 造 ， 在 甚 麼 也 在 中 國 製 造 的 今 時 今 日 ， 這 份 刁 鑽 和 心 意 很 叫 人 珍 惜 。 Kitsune 系 列 亦 不 會 在 Delay No Mall 發 售 。 Arnault 說 ： 「 我 總 要 留 一 些 特 別 的 東 西 給 願 意 到 天 后 Kapok 的 朋 友 來 ！ 」
天 后 的 店 子 也 將 成 為 絕 唱 ， 租 約 到 今 年 八 月 期 滿 後 不 能 續 租 ， 因 為 已 被 發 展 商 收 購 發 展 豪 宅 ， 有 點 兒 叫 人 可 惜 。 但 Arnault 承 諾 他 會 在 附 近 再 尋 覓 店 址 ， 因 為 他 喜 歡 這 些 香 港 地 區 ， 有 本 土 風 味 ， 交 通 尚 算 方 便 ， 但 又 有 自 成 一 國 的 社 區 文 化 ， 我 提 議 他 到 大 坑 開 店 ， 他 笑 笑 口 說 ： 「 這 正 是 我 在 想 的 。 」

簡介
現代, 南韓首爾~ 愛好製作雕塑的家庭主婦妍 (Yeon) 發現丈夫有外遇, 卻只一直啞忍不作聲~ 電視上正播放關於死囚張震的新聞, 他在等候行刑時以利器企圖自殺, 事後被救回~ 妍決定前往監獄探訪張震, 本來不得其門而入, 但身份神秘的獄長不知何故特許她內進~ 此後, 妍每次前往探訪張震都會把接見室粉飾一番, 並為他高歌一曲, 二人漸漸萌生感情~ 妍的丈夫察覺妻子行為怪異, 決定驅車跟蹤, 卻從監獄的閉路電視目睹妻子跟張震親熱的場面

評語
看南韓導演金基德這新作的時候, 不期然想起彭浩翔的 "出埃及記" (Exodus) [2007]: 兩片同樣有著荒謬至極, 難以置信的故事, 同樣以風格先行, 分別在於彭浩翔是自覺地刻意誇張惡搞, 借題發揮; 金基德則要演員認真地演繹這漏洞處處的劇本, 並期望從脫離現實的情節中搾出一點寫實的情感和反映現實社會的深意

"Breath" 劇情犯駁之處可謂俯拾皆是, 順便也能輕易指出以下顯眼的幾點: 等待行刑的死囚會被安排集體囚禁的嗎? 曾在獄中自戕的囚犯仍會接觸到可以製成武器的東西嗎? 為甚麼獄長會容許妍 (朴智娥 飾) 探訪張震 (張震 飾), 並讓她貼牆紙播音樂唱歌?

從前金基德面對劇本上的種種漏洞, 只會若無其事地將之視作理所當然或是蒙混過關, 但今次竟然更加極端, 在片中親自飾演監獄獄長, 索性跳上銀幕親手把不合情理之處撫平, 好讓故事順利發展~ 事實上, 若不是獄長批准, 整個故事根本就不能成立~ 換句話說, 一向大男人主義的金基德, 今次無論在戲裡戲外都成為極權的操縱者: 戲外他固然是掌管一切的導演; 戲內他飾演的監獄長亦一直在操控著幾位主角的關係, 不論是批准妍與張震見面, 或按警鐘下令二人分開, 他都一直處於神一般高高在上的位置~ 別說演員, 就連觀眾也只有被他操弄的份兒~

無疑, 金基德的電影一向就像寓言故事般超現實, 從不太理會故事的可信性, 只管用極端乖張的風格自說自話~ 但若看 "Breath" 所展示的風格, 卻又免不了會惹來一點疑問: 那些不說話的人物, 突發的情慾, 讓演員在戲中飾演跟自己名字相同的角色, 不就是來蔡明亮慣用的手法嗎? 電影中途突兀地插入色彩繽紛的歌曲作點綴, 更明顯有著 "天邊一朵雲" (the Wayward Cloud) [2005] 的影子~ 至於妍, 張震與另一位囚犯之間的三角愛慾關係, 也有如 "黑眼圈" (I Don't Want to Sleep Alone) [2006] 的翻版, 只是男女身份有點不同 (這也不出奇, 金基德電影中付出和犧牲的一方總是女生)~ 

當然, 觀眾大可以發揮想像力, 把電影中一切不合常理的東西視作某種象徵和符號, 加以詮釋和合理化~ 例如奪走別人的呼吸, 可視作對別人的終極佔有; 幾首分別以春夏秋冬作背景的歌曲, 是以四季比喻人生 (這也是翻炒導演自己的舊橋!); 那兩次飄落地下的白恤衫, 喻意妍在人生態度上的轉變, 諸如此類~ 但導演把眾多似是而非的符號放在荒謬連篇的故事之中, 電影從頭到尾也沒能帶出一點比較明確的主題, 就像兩年前的舊作 "Bow" (情慾穿心箭) [2005], 在鮮明的風格背後只顯得故弄玄虛~ 金基德在這裡對演員和觀眾的絕對操縱, 並沒有如 "Hidden" (偷拍) [2005] 般帶出真相/謊言, 真實/錄像一類深刻的矛盾和衝擊, 卻更像是一位導演為自己的劇本自圓其說的終極手段~

Goldfrapp 的 《 Seventh Tree 》

驚 喜 兩 字 ， 除 了 正 好 形 容 筆 者 打 開 英 國 二 人 組 合 Goldfrapp 的 《 Seventh Tree 》 這 盒 製 作 精 美 的 特 別 版 Boxset 時 的 即 時 反 應 外 ， 也 是 這 朝 早 在 趕 上 班 、 趕 在 死 線 完 成 這 篇 稿 子 前 ， 聽 畢 全 碟 後 的 心 情 。
由 Alison Goldfrapp 與 Will Gregory 組 成 的 Goldfrapp ， 經 過 了 很 Glam 的 《 Black Cherry 》 以 及 玩 dance 可 以 勁 過 Kylie 和 娜 姐 的 《 Supernature 》 之 後 ， 今 次 卻 重 回 了 處 女 大 碟 《 Felt Mountain 》 時 較 為 溫 婉 的 一 面 ， 不 是 舊 酒 新 瓶 或 食 老 本 ， 反 而 是 集 合 Nick Drake 、 Air 、 Serge Gainsbourg 、 早 期 的 Roxy Music 、 Cocteau Twins 、 Joni Mitchell 之 大 成 ， 利 用 木 結 他 、 弦 樂 、 moog 琴 ， 將 folk 、 ambient 、 eletronica 共 冶 一 爐 ， 製 成 了 一 張 08 年 重 要 傑 作 。
開 場 曲 《 Clowns 》 灰 暗 陰 沉 中 ， 聽 到 了 acoustic 結 他 與 淡 淡 而 優 美 的 弦 樂 ， 師 承 Nick Drake 優 美 傳 統 外 ， 氣 氛 與 質 感 也 帶 點 Led Zeppelin 的 名 曲 《 Stairway to Heaven 》 的 色 彩 。 還 有 《 Road To Somewhere 》 夠 冷 艷 、 神 秘 、 又 如 以 光 速 進 入 了 dreamy 國 度 ， 很 型 。
全 碟 中 優 美 而 感 人 的 時 刻 比 比 皆 是 ， 如 曲 式 很 Eels 、 又 加 入 了 Kraftwerk 式 電 音 的 《 Happiness 》 ， 一 句 "Join our group and you will find harmony and peace of mind, make it better" 的 歌 詞 ， 正 道 出 全 碟 主 題 。 歌 曲 「 食 自 己 」 的 《 Eat Yourself 》 並 不 搞 笑 ， 引 子 中 先 玩 懷 舊 唱 片 的 noise 及 走 音 ， Alison 以 經 歷 風 霜 的 沙 沙 歌 聲 講 怎 去 面 對 痛 苦 ， 很 感 人 ， 具 有 催 淚 的 效 果 。
較 有 eletroinca 跳 舞 氣 息 的 《 A&E 》 一 曲 ， 不 似 《 Supernature 》 那 麼 loud ， 唱 出 了 掛 念 愛 人 的 心 情 ， 可 令 聽 官 淚 盈 於 睫 。 《 Cologne Cerrone Houdini 》 則 最 迷 幻 ， 而 《 Caravan Girl 》 仍 有 Indie-pop 的 清 新 與 實 驗 大 膽 外 ， 還 具 早 期 Elton John 色 彩 ， 令 人 置 身 音 樂 嘉 年 華 中 ， 一 樣 精 采 萬 分 。
