Chanel has always symbolized elegance; the brand's identity has always been crystal-clear. It is how Karl Lagerfeld has pushed the boundaries of what is possible, reinventing classic Chanel pieces without compromising the integrity of Coco Chanel's original designs, that commands such respect. The initial context of his work demanded a kind of radicalism. Before Karl, we all looked to couture for inspiration and direction. Now, through his work, fashion originates from the street, the media—anywhere. This has resulted in exciting collections that are provocative and sensual. His unrelenting experimentation in fashion, art and photography offers us endless possibilities yet is always grounded and relevant.
Karl consistently reinvents the program with his own ideas and interpretations, which aren't tied to the form of an institution. Karl, 69, is a passionate connoisseur of architecture. He invited me to create the Mobile Art for Chanel, likening the value of my designs to that of great poetry. I could not resist the challenge. He allowed us the greatest degree of experimentation, and we used the latest technologies to create a woven topology of fluid spaces. Visitors are wrapped in a spatial complexity that simultaneously captures and liberates.
Mobile Art for Chanel illustrates how we both feel that fashion and architecture must constantly evolve. What's new in our generation is a greater level of social complexity—manifest in its architecture, art and fashion. There are no simple formulas, no global solutions and little repetition. Karl has spent a career showing us just this.

As Dan Quayle knows, a single event can define one's image. business execs have the same problem. Throwing a chair across the room when an employee tells you he's going to work for a competitor, dancing like a monkey at an employee meeting, screaming "Developers!" 14 times while drenched with sweat at a software conference—things like that are hard to live down. In Steve Ballmer's case, however, it's not a single event (he denies throwing the chair, but the dancing and screaming live on in viral video), nor does it unfairly define his image.
My interview with him onstage at a Microsoft conference in March wasn't exactly soft and lacy. For crying out loud, he threw my MacBook Air on the ground. The man is truly WYSIWYG—what you see is what you get—maybe more so than Microsoft's products. By contrast, Ballmer's title—chief executive officer—is a disguise. He is actually Microsoft's combative, take-no-prisoners chief warrior. If you want 95% of the wallets of every market that you're in, then you want this Steve. If you want 95% of the mind share of every market that you're in, then you need the other Steve (Jobs).
Ballmer, 52, is worth $15 billion, which makes him one of the world's 50 richest people, but he hasn't forgotten what got him there: sheer force of will. Many execs throw fits, dance like nuts and scream, but none deliver results the way Ballmer does. In the past two years, Microsoft profits have surged 20% and sales 28%. He has amassed a war chest, and he has never been shy about deploying it. Yahoo! is learning what it's like to be in his crosshairs. He also swears that he's going to smoke Google. Whether you like the company or not, give credit where credit is due: Steve Ballmer kicks ass.

When the British rock band Radiohead announced that In Rainbows would be made available online directly to consumers at whatever price they wanted to pay, many said it signaled the end of the world's major music labels. As the CEO of one of them, I may surprise you by saying that in some ways, they were right. The traditional record-label business model—the one based on controlling access and distribution—is dead.
But Radiohead's innovation also indicated something more important: that new models are very much alive. Does this mean we view the future as a giant tip jar? Not exactly—and I suspect Radiohead doesn't either, particularly in light of the commercial success In Rainbows had after the "pay any price" offer ended.
In reality, the music industry is no longer defined by a single model but thousands of them. Consumers now access more music more conveniently than ever before. This empowerment has driven changes in the relationships between artists and music companies. As a result, artists today can establish relationships with labels that are best suited to their own music, commercial needs and artistic development. For example, while we had been Radiohead's longtime music publisher, we hadn't previously distributed the band's recorded music. But in the case of In Rainbows, we partnered with the band to create a unique digital-distribution venture to make the album available at online music stores.
If any band could extend its creativity and spirit to redefine an entire industry, it would be Radiohead. With a single bold experiment, it revealed a broad array of possibilities for experiencing and monetizing music in the future.

Steve Jobs is great at playing the countercultural icon. He's a college dropout who once backpacked around India looking for spiritual enlightenment, and he takes only $1 a year in salary. There are righteous battles to fight, and with Macs and iTunes and iPhones, Jobs fights them, taking on the entrenched megaliths that try to dictate our tastes in computers and music and mobile phones.
But don't let the black mock turtleneck and denim trousers fool you. More than anything else, Jobs is a canny CEO who knows how to sell product. Steve Wozniak was the technical genius behind the first Apple computer; Jobs saw the marketability. He now presides over a company with $24 billion in annual sales and 22,000 employees. Jobs, 53, is revered by tech and design geeks, but the world's business-school students may have the most to learn from him. Apple's stock has shot up more than 70% over the past year, thanks to Jobs' strategy of focusing on his most profitable customers and coming up with new things to sell them—the ultra-thin MacBook Air most recently—rather than just chasing more market share.
Jobs may be a celebrity CEO, but he doesn't jump out of airplanes or traipse around Africa with bundles of cash. He is always in character and always on message, so much so that when late-night TV parodies him, he's invariably rolling out some new iProduct . Jobs gets called mercurial, egomaniacal, a micromanager. If that sounds a little like a CEO doing his job, maybe that's because he is—and a mighty fine one.

The most appropriate way to describe Indra Nooyi, chairman and CEO of PepsiCo, is "world class leader." Her sharp strategic mind, tremendous market insight and humanitarian contributions all combine to make her a rare executive among the global corporate giants. PepsiCo's international business grew 22% last year, and she is showing the way for American companies trying to do well overseas. (These days, that's everybody.) Indra, 52, was also way ahead of her competitors in moving the company toward healthier products. She pushed for PepsiCo to buy Quaker Oats and Tropicana, and I wasn't surprised when PepsiCo removed trans fats from its products well before most other companies did.
I've known Indra for the past 10 years or so, ever since Starbucks and PepsiCo began a joint-venture partnership to market and distribute ready-to-drink Starbucks products. I have been particularly impressed by her willingness to do the right thing for her employees and consumers. As someone who has always aspired to build a company committed to its people and to the world, I admire her determination to achieve sustainability at an established company like PepsiCo. And I believe that all socially responsible companies could learn from Indra Nooyi's style of leadership. She welcomes hearing from people who disagree with her, but she is single-minded about following the path she believes is best for her company and its shareholders. Under her direction, I expect that we will see PepsiCo do even more in the future to excite consumers and create a better global community.

When I first saw Takashi Murakami's work, I smiled and wondered, Where did this explosion come from? Who was responsible for this collision of psychedelia, manga and, well, art? Then I thought, I would love it if the mind that imagined this dizzying world of jellyfish eyes, singing moss, magic mushrooms and morphing creatures would be willing to have a go at the iconic Louis Vuitton monogram.
So I e-mailed Takashi. And he answered. Before long, there he was, standing in my Paris office, wearing his round, wire-rimmed glasses, skeleton-print T shirt, baggy short pants and a sort of samurai ponytail. He looked like a cool skater kid, an eternal teenager.
He and his crew, with total respect for Vuitton's heritage, were eager to contribute to the creation of a new chapter.
How we would proceed in our collaboration was set forth by Takashi, 46. We would have a game of "catch ball," throwing ideas and images back and forth, usually over e-mail, until we were both satisfied. Our first agreed-upon work was a straightforward interpretation of Vuitton's traditional monogram. What had once been set in brown with gold symbols was now alive in 33 clashing colors against a jet black or optic white background. With a bit more throwing of the ball, each symbol within the monogram would soon have its very own identity—even the LV would eventually be entwined in moss and sprout hands.
Our collaboration has produced a lot of works and has been a huge influence and inspiration to many. It has been and continues to be a monumental marriage of art and commerce. The ultimate crossover—one for both the fashion and art history books.
The best part is that it continues, it grows, it morphs and still excites. Our efforts have come full circle. And I get to keep playing this game of catch ball with a great artist—and friend.

Time 100 - Khaled Hosseini

Not many people write successful first novels. Still fewer are able to change the world with their writing. Khaled Hosseini, 43, has done both. His 2003 novel, The Kite Runner, introduced readers around the world to the people of Afghanistan. Four years later, he published A Thousand Splendid Suns—and helped his audience see the faces of the women under the burqas.
Hosseini's stories are set against the backdrop of Afghanistan's tumultuous history. His complex portrayal of human nature, however, transcends geographic boundaries. In more than 40 languages, readers everywhere can recognize the best and worst in humanity in his characters—often in the same person.
In America, Hosseini's writing has invited many to look beyond the post-9/11 stereotypes about his birth country. We have grown to see Afghanistan as a land of men and women, each with their own hopes and longings for love.
The U.S. office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees recognized The Kite Runner's impact by naming Hosseini the 2006 Humanitarian of the Year. Since then, his work as a goodwill envoy has taken him to the homes of returning Afghan refugees and to camps in eastern Chad.
Hosseini has said his novels intertwine the "intimate and personal" with the "broad and historical." As President Bush and I have encountered him through his writing and his work, we've discovered that his life does much the same.

Time 100 - Joel & Ethan Coen

It's a big hairy deal, making the TIME 100—after all, some 6.7 billion people were left off—but don't expect to hear whoops of joy from the brothers Coen. The space between ecstasy and depression, which for other filmmakers is a chasm, is for them the slimmest crevice. Their appearances this past Oscar night, to pick up statuettes for Best Picture, Direction and Adapted Screenplay for No Country for Old Men, might have been three trips to the dentist, so little joy did they betray. They're way too cool to be caught expressing emotion.
The brothers' admirers are more demonstrative, and with good reason: the Coens make damn fine movies. Since Blood Simple in 1984, they've lent their acute camera skill to tales of murder, kidnapping and other crimes of the heart, perpetrated by lost souls as funny as they are desperate. Miller's Crossing, Fargo, The Big Lebowski and The Man Who Wasn't There all possess the dry, distanced wit of an Old Testament God having a quiet laugh at the sad creatures he let run wild on Earth.
In their dozen features, Joel (below right), 53, and Ethan, 50, have shown what real independent cinema is: finding a unique voice, and eye, and being true to both. Here's hoping the Coens take just a little pleasure in that grand achievement.
Time 100 - Herbie Hancock

Herbie Hancock was performing classical music at 11. That his work has fanned out and reached out to the point where, at 68, he won this year's Best Album Grammy is proof that it's possible to speak to everyone if you're open. If one word could ever describe Herbie, it's open.
Musically, he still has a childlike nature, pursuing things in the spirit of play that we're all in this for. (For a while there, he was really into dotted 16th notes and minor ninths.) He's open as to whom he plays with; he doesn't feel intimidated by big names or worry that someone in the band can't quite cut it. And he's constant. He hasn't burned any bridges.
Herbie's openness makes him fearless. He plays the piano as if it's an orchestra, never saying "I can't do this" or "I won't do that." For him, the piano is a palette. And he doesn't really have a need to be understood. So when jazz pianists objected to his moving toward pop, he deflected them easily because he's just so warm. Whenever we get together with Herbie, it's always off the cuff. And something always develops: Herbie is an enthusiast, loves a great conversation and has a lot of endurance. The guy can hang.

If the brain is science's great frontier, you need someone to lead the expedition—someone with smarts and curiosity, not to mention a large bank account to finance the journey. In the terra incognita of the brain, that's Paul Allen.
Co-founder of Microsoft, owner of three sports teams and lead backer of SpaceShipOne, which in 2004 made the first private manned space flight, Allen, 55, is also head of the Allen Institute for Brain Science, which was founded in 2001 with the goal of mapping the brain, cell by cell and gene by gene. His scientific team began with the mouse brain and finished the job in 2006, posting all the data online. Scientists everywhere now have a free neural GPS to learn where and how specific genes are expressed—a vital tool for studying similar functions in human brains.
The institute has now begun its own effort to map human gene expressions, hoping for insight into the molecular basis of consciousness and creativity. Allen founded his institute in the belief that with the right tools you can transform the speed of science itself. Not many people accomplish that even once. Allen is doing it yet again.

Think it's hard to keep the computers in your kid's school up-to-date? How about the 50% of children worldwide who learn outdoors? If half the planet was not going to be excluded from the Internet age, somebody had to come up with a machine that would work in such unlikely places. Mary Lou Jepsen, 43, did. Along the way, she also survived a terrifying disease.
Jepsen is a veteran of the MIT Media Lab, where she co-created the world's first holographic video system in 1989—back when computer imaging meant straight lines on a cathode screen. In 2005 Jepsen and Media Lab founder Nicholas Negroponte launched the nonprofit, open-source One Laptop Per Child program, which, as the name suggests, was an attempt to get a computer to every child in the world who needs one. The machines would have to work in extreme climate, amid spotty power and Internet connectivity, and be readable in direct sunlight. Oh, and they would have to sell for around $100 each. Negroponte ran the project, but Jepsen was the lead innovator and architect of the hundreds-strong team that would design the machine.
Within two years they succeeded, creating a computer that can run on solar power, with five times the screen resolution of other laptops and a wireless system that creates its own network. The $100 price point has not been met, but $188 has. Jepsen did all that 12 years after receiving a diagnosis of a brain tumor in 1995 that had gone undetected for five years. She beat the disease but must take a dozen pills every day to keep her hormone output stable. Something of a self-taught expert on hormones, she now offers her insights to others who are diagnosed with the same illness. Jepsen is known among her friends as the "light lady" for her work with computer imaging. But the kind of light she's shedding goes far beyond the screen.

The internet is about people connecting to people, whether for business, politics or socializing. That's something we've all been doing since long before the Internet existed. The real accomplishment is to make those connections so versatile and different that they create a social network that not only reflects your life but maybe expands it.
Mark Zuckerberg, 23, the creator of Facebook, has done just that.
Working from his dorm room at Harvard in 2004, Zuckerberg launched Facebook as a campuswide system and later expanded it to other colleges. The site exploded nationally and globally, and with that came tens of millions of dollars from investors, buyout offers from Yahoo! and Viacom, and a worldwide community of Facebook users.
All that happened because Zuckerberg has remained true to his vision, focusing on building a community rather than on a mere exit strategy—which is why those buyout offers have been declined. Facebook also provides a flexible information ecology, offering a fairly open system that allows users to add small applications to pages. As a result, members are starting to run businesses via the Facebook platform, including loan systems and music distribution. There are challenges, including "Facebook fatigue," which results from just too many invitations. Then, of course, there are issues related to monetization; investors are patient, but not forever. Facebook, however, just keeps growing, with more than 70 million active users so far. That's a lot of people connecting via Zuckerberg's vision—which is just what that vision was always about.

Scientists and evangelicals slept side by side last summer on the floor of a preschool in the Alaskan village of Shishmaref. We were there to see for ourselves the devastation of climate change on the Inupiaq Eskimos, whose island is eroding into the Chukchi Sea.
The leaders of our small band were the unlikely pair of Eric Chivian, 65 (left, in picture), and Richard Cizik, 56. Chivian shared the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1985 for his efforts to stop nuclear war, and is now a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and director of its Center for Health and the Global Environment. Cizik, an ordained Evangelical Presbyterian minister and head of the Office of Government Affairs for the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), came to prominence 25 years ago when he drafted a letter to President Ronald Reagan inviting him to talk to the NAE. That address became Reagan's "evil empire" speech. The event helped give Evangelicals the political clout they still enjoy.
What brings Chivian and Cizik together is a shared passion for the environment, although they act on that passion in very different ways. Chivian is a highly trained scientist who tells stories like a teacher with the bedside manner of the general-practice physician he used to be. Cizik quotes the Bible, carefully referring to "creation care" rather than climate change or global warming, and advocates a brand of pro-life politics that extends well beyond human conception, up through the care of God's creation itself.
They both have their critics. Why would a scientist like Chivian collaborate with Evangelical Christians who talk about the authority of the Bible and their faith in Jesus Christ? Cizik's detractors say there are more important issues for Evangelicals to tackle, and there is no consensus within the community about global warming anyway.
Coming from different directions, the physician and the preacher combine their influence, persuading Americans to take better care of God's creation. And they practice what they preach: Chivian keeps his thermostat at 60°F (16°C) on cold New England nights, and Cizik drives to work in a Prius hybrid.

I know of no chef worth his salt who doesn't keep a copy of Harold McGee's masterwork, On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen, close at hand. Simply put, it is the Rosetta stone of the culinary world. Before it, cooking was governed by tradition, superstition and dogma. Armed with reason and natural curiosity, McGee flipped on the science switch, and suddenly there was light.
Whereas Julia Child taught "how," McGee explains "why." Now we know why eggs, meat, water, sugar and countless other ingredients do the things they do. We know what happens during the sauté and the roast. The agents of fermentation, of leavening, of caramelizing are no longer mysteries. McGee, 56, is so influential a figure not because he was the first to write about such things but because he was the first to approach them as a cook rather than as a lab technician. You don't need a chemistry degree to grasp what he's saying. McGee's work is readable, practical and as useful as duct tape. I feel certain that were it not for McGee, the course of my own life and career would be very different indeed.

By Jeff Han's description, he was "one of those troublemaker kids." Five years ahead in math learning levels. A soldering iron in hand at age 6. Taking things apart to see how they worked. Even putting some of them back together.
Han, 32, was an obscure New York University computer-science researcher two years ago when he made a presentation introducing the concept of multi-touch sensing screens. Now his work is coveted by clients ranging from the CIA to CNN, all of which realize that the era of the single-touch screen (think ATMs) is over and the multi-touch screen (imagine a piano keyboard on a screen) is upon us.
My fingers are part of that new world. Tune in to CNN on any major election night as I navigate the ever-changing map that the folks at CNN call the Magic Wall. CNN owns one map, with a second on the way. The intelligence and military communities use the technology, and Han says new educational, medical and creative applications are in the works.
"Multi-touch-sensing was designed to allow nontechies to do masterful things while allowing power users to be even more virtuosic," Han says. Count me in the nontechie column. Count me too as someone who believes Han has done more than start a great business; he has also dramatically changed the way we interact with our computers.

Randy Pausch is dying. But in the process, he's teaching millions of people about living.
Some colleges have adopted the idea of a "last lecture" to teach students life lessons that aren't necessarily included on a syllabus. But Randy's situation has brought a whole new meaning to the term. A computer-science professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Randy was told last August that his pancreatic cancer had spread and he had just three to six months to live. He's 47 and has three kids—almost 2, 3 and 6—and a wife he clearly adores.
Most of us would slip into a deep depression, but Randy used the experience as teaching material. And thanks to YouTube, his lecture doesn't require any tuition checks. His scenes from a life are punctuated with humor and humility. He deadpans, "My mother took great relish in introducing me as 'This is my son—he's a doctor but not the kind that helps people.'" After showing the walls of his childhood bedroom covered with his drawings of rocket ships and math equations, he tells his audience, "If your kids want to paint their bedrooms, as a favor to me, let 'em do it."
Randy's message is about following your dreams, dealing with the ones that don't come true and having fun along the way. And it has expanded far beyond that lecture hall. His talk has been viewed by more than 6 million people. He's a co-author of a best-selling book and has testified before Congress about pancreatic cancer, a disease that kills 33,000 Americans each year. He says the lessons were meant as a "message in a bottle" for his kids. But millions of us now feel part of Randy's extended family—and that it isn't too late to listen, learn and really live.

It's not every day that success stories echo out of Iraq into the halls of power, but Madeeha Hasan Odhaib defies the norm. Armed with her sewing machine, unflinching stoicism and determination, Madeeha, 37, is mending the fabric of Iraq.
Four years ago, this mother of two and seamstress turned district council member took three sewing machines, leveraged them into 60 and built a business sewing hospital sheets and flags. She now employs 100 women. That figure may seem insignificant compared with the accomplishments of other achievers on TIME's list. But in a country with more than 60% unemployment and rampant poverty, such efforts provide a lifeline. Each woman Madeeha employs returns home with an invaluable sense of self-respect, money in her purse, food for her children and optimism for a daughter desperately seeking a role model amid mayhem. Madeeha also treads—or, rather, threads—the line between activism and heroism. She has coordinated with the Red Crescent, Red Cross, Hands of Mercy and Iraqi army to distribute food around Baghdad. And despite threats, she says she'll never give up.
Iraq is suffering one of the worst humanitarian crises we have ever seen. While Madeeha rightly makes Time's list, women like her are found throughout Iraq, sewing hope one stitch at a time. Through Madeeha, we celebrate all of Iraq's courageous women, whose resilience and resourcefulness hold the promise of a new dawn.

Where's the tallest building in the world? It should come as no surprise that it's in the realm of Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, ruler of Dubai and unlikely poster boy for globalization. When the Burj Dubai (Dubai Tower) is completed next year, the 160-plus-story spire of offices and luxury apartments will be the latest jewel in the impressive crown that Sheik Mohammed, 58, has been steadily assembling for a quarter-century.
Working first as a deputy to his father, the late Sheik Rashid, and since 2006 ruling the country on his own, Sheik Mo (as some of his subjects fondly call him) has transformed the petroleum-poor desert emirate into a major global hub for business, finance, trade and tourism. Sheik Mo has made Dubai an internationally recognized synonym for success in a Middle East that has been plagued by war, civil discontent and religious extremism.
His pursuit of excellence extends from business to sports: a champion equestrian, Sheik Mo owns leading stud farms and hosts the world's richest horse race. And it has made him a role model for a new generation of Arab leaders. Last year he set up the Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum Foundation with a $10 billion endowment; it aims to inspire knowledge, ideas and innovation among the builders of tomorrow's Arab world. Dubai's visionary wants young Arab minds, too, to reach for the skies.

From the first time I played soccer against him, it was obvious Kaká was something special. Late in a semi-final game during the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup, our U.S. team was up 1-0 against Brazil. But the world champions came back, and Kaká proved decisive. The Brazilian scored first, and his team went on to win in overtime. It was clear that he had the tools to become one of the world's top players.
He has not disappointed. Named both FIFA World Player of the Year and European footballer of the year in 2007, Kaká, 26, helped his club, Italy's AC Milan, to European and world titles last year. He's an attacking midfielder with tremendous technical ability and great size, and is good in the air. He is the total footballer.
There is, however, more to him than sport. In 2004, Kaká became the U.N. World Food Program's youngest ambassador. And he is devoted to his faith. An evangelical Christian, Kaká has talked publicly about becoming a minister when he retires from the game. After winning the European Champions League final last year, he took off his jersey to reveal a T shirt that read, "I Belong to Jesus".
I might question whether soccer stadiums are the right venue for promoting religion, but in an age in which many professional athletes care more about cars, women and controversy, it's refreshing to see one who is committed to having a positive impact on the world around him.

There is no one else quite like him. And there probably never will be. The best cyclist ever, Lance Armstrong won the sport's premier event, the Tour de France, an almost incomprehensible seven times from 1999 to 2005. But before he could do that, in 1996 he had to beat back a cancer that was supposed to take his life. Testicular cancer had spread to his abdomen, lungs and brain. Grim-faced doctors told him he had no chance. But no chance were not words that had meaning for Lance.
He spearheaded the Lance Armstrong Foundation, which made a yellow plastic loop a statement of resistance and strength across the entire planet. Like Lance himself, his foundation looks for the next horizon. It advocates for those living with cancer, funds research, inspires the cancer community to support each other and is collectively stronger than any one of us could be alone. Maybe team cycling taught him this, or maybe Lance, 36, is what you see.
Lance took a minor sport in America and turned it into a great national passion and a great national pride. And he did it by struggling for years, alone on a bike often in unforgiving weather, over terrain that most of us would view as hostile, when no one was watching, no one was cheering.
He inspired all of us who face a cancer diagnosis to search out the doctors who believe that we can live, to hold on to those friends and family who stand beside our bed—and then to fight to prove the faith of those friends and the beliefs of those doctors well founded. After Lance, no one of us could ever again say it was too hard, the odds stacked against us were too high, the fight already lost. The fight I fight is for me and my family, but the power to fight belongs in good measure to Lance.

Arthur could well have been talking about Andre Agassi. We are all aware of his tennis accomplishments, the brilliance and flash of his career. It's impossible to forget his epic U.S. Open victories, and also—though he might want us to forget—the mullet and acid-washed jeans. But the greater challenge for an athlete is to have a positive impact away from the cameras. I've been privileged to witness firsthand Andre, 38, do just that.
When I was 17 years old, we were on a flight together. I was very nervous, but Andre was kind and encouraged me to ask him questions. When I asked about his biggest regret, I expected some answer related to our profession. Instead he said it was not starting his charitable foundation earlier. I was shocked that a person who has set such a high bar for athletic philanthropy still felt like he could do more. But that is Andre.
There are most likely plenty of kids at Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, a model K-12 charter school for disadvantaged children in Las Vegas, who have never watched a match of his. I promise you that Andre could not care less. He would rather be viewed as the man who gives them dreams and opportunities.

When I was learning how to climb mountains as a blind person, I had a lot of encouragement from experts. But after I summited Mount Everest, these people weren't ready to accept what I had done at face value. Some said I must have cheated; one even claimed I had an unfair advantage: "I'd climb Mount Everest too if I couldn't see how far I had to fall."
Similarly, when Oscar Pistorius' lower legs were amputated at age 1, few would have banked on this South African challenging world-class sprinters. At 20, when he began to close in on an Olympic-qualifying time for the 400 m, experts posited that his times were so good, he must have been getting an un-fair advantage from his bladelike prosthetics. When he set his sights on the Olympic Games in Beijing, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) ruled he couldn't compete against able-bodied athletes. An IAAF-initiated study found that more energy is returned to Pistorius' upper legs from his blades than from ankles and calf muscles and that he uses less oxygen.
Pistorius, 21, is appealing, on the basis of studies with differing results. It was only recently that living with prosthetic legs was seen as a huge impediment, but he has turned this perception upside down. He's on the cusp of a paradigm shift in which disability becomes ability, disadvantage becomes advantage. Yet we mustn't lose sight of what makes an athlete great. It's too easy to credit Pistorius' success to technology. Through birth or circumstance, some are given certain gifts, but it's what one does with those gifts, the hours devoted to training, the desire to be the best, that is at the true heart of a champion.

It is one thing to talk about the problems of the world and quite another to actually try to change things.
As a team, actors Brad Pitt, 44, and Angelina Jolie, 32, have served as our goodwill ambassadors worldwide. They brought help to Pakistan in 2005, after a catastrophic earthquake killed tens of thousands of people and left millions homeless. They have tended to the poor and sick in Africa. And they've raised global awareness—and contributed $1 million of their own money—for the victims of atrocities in Darfur. Brad co-founded Not on Our Watch, an organization set up to focus global attention on Darfur and other hot spots.
In the U.S., Brad and Angelina didn't just talk about, or even just throw money at, the tragic fallout from Hurricane Katrina. They actually moved to New Orleans and have set about trying to make right what so many have made wrong. Brad established a project to finance and build 150 new homes in the Ninth Ward.
Angelina has worked tirelessly through the United Nations on behalf of refugees around the world, touring border camps in Africa, Asia and Latin America and lobbying on Capitol Hill. The couple cares for three adopted children, from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam, in addition to their biological daughter.
There are hundreds of people who could be honored for their good works, but I've seen Brad and Angelina firsthand, and their commitment together is truly impressive.

Ma Ying-jeou is one of those rare politicians who have an opportunity to shape the destiny not only of their own nation but also of an entire region. In March elections, the charismatic Ma, 57, won Taiwan's presidential election on a message of hope that could defuse his country's nearly six-decade conflict with China and put to rest one of the last vestiges of the cold war in Asia.
Ma, a Harvard Law School graduate, is proposing that China and Taiwan set aside the ideological differences at the heart of their conflict and engage in a sweeping program of economic and cultural exchanges. The heightened traffic of people and money would, he argues, strengthen ties between the two countries, boost their economies and reduce the risk of war.
However, as with any reformer, the challenges facing Ma in his quest are as imposing as the goal he is seeking to achieve. Though Beijing appears willing to cooperate in Ma's effort, it is hard to know how far the Chinese leadership is willing to go on issues it considers highly sensitive. Many people in Taiwan are also fearful that gargantuan China will end up absorbing their tiny island if ties become too close. Ma, though, is focused on the opportunities. "It is going to be a win-win situation," he predicts.

A novelist seeking to tell the story of Sonia Gandhi may be forgiven for seeing a fairy-tale element in the narrative: Beautiful foreigner comes to strange new land and marries handsome prince. They enjoy years of bliss, until the prince is obliged, in painful circumstances, to take over the kingdom and discovers the harsh realities of ruling a turbulent realm, culminating in the unspeakable tragedy of his murder. The queen retreats into silence and mourning until the insistent supplications of her courtiers compel her to emerge and once again take the destiny of the kingdom into her hands. Bliss to triumph to tragedy to triumph again — a classic tale; I should have begun this story with the words Once upon a time...
But there is a twist to the tale. For the queen, offered the crown on a brocade cushion, turns it down. She prefers to remain behind the throne, walking with the peasantry, rallying the people but leaving power in the hands of her gray-haired viziers. The story of Sonia Gandhi, 61, is remarkable at every level, and the fairy-tale metaphor barely begins to scratch the surface of its extraordinariness. But which story is one to tell? That of the Italian who became the most powerful figure in a land of a billion Indians? That of the reluctant politician who led her party to power? That of the parliamentary leader who rejected the highest office in her adoptive land, one she had earned by her hard work and political courage? That of the woman of principle who demonstrated that one could stand for the right values even in a profession corroded by cynicism and cant? That of the novice in politics who became a master of the art, trusted her own instincts and discovered she could be right more often than her jaded rivals could ever have imagined?
The story of Sonia Gandhi must be all these stories, and more.

After the long, eventful reign of Alan Greenspan at the U.S. Federal Reserve, his successor Ben Bernanke promised a duller, more predictable tenure when he took charge in February 2006. Then history intervened, in the form of the subprime-mortgage crisis that erupted last year. Since then the soft-spoken former Princeton professor has been at the helm of an increasingly bold, increasingly unconventional, increasingly controversial effort to keep America's housing problems from toppling the global financial system.
Early in his career as an economist, the South Carolina-raised and Harvard-and MIT-educated Bernanke, 53, studied the causes of the Great Depression and concluded that the "malfunctioning of financial institutions" was a major culprit. Malfunctioning is what the market for mortgage securities started doing last summer, and since then many other credit markets have followed suit. The result has been what many have called the worst U.S. financial crisis since the Depression, and Bernanke has been going to unprecedented lengths to keep it from getting worse. His most dramatic intervention so far came in March, when the Fed forced and helped finance a shotgun marriage between about-to-fail investment bank Bear Stearns and JPMorgan Chase.
Bernanke's efforts have been a success — sort of. Loans are still being made (although not nearly as many as there were before last summer), and the world's ATMs are still spitting out cash. But the Fed's boldness has raised troubling questions about financial risk, moral hazard and the role of regulators that will occupy Wall Street and Washington for years to come. Meanwhile, the U.S. economy appears to have fallen into recession, the dollar is testing its all-time lows, and while credit-market jitters have receded, they certainly haven't gone away.
Dull predictability? Only in Bernanke's dreams.

Hu Jintao is the first Chinese leader who grew up in the aftermath of the revolution that established communism in 1949. He inherits its tradition, but he has gone far beyond it. In a marked evolution from Mao Zedong, Hu, 65, has proclaimed the goal of a harmonious society whose components work together by consensus rather than direction. It is a principle he has tried to apply to international affairs as well.
Having met with Hu on many occasions, I invariably found him thoughtful, extremely well prepared and very courteous. His mastery of the subject matter seems to make small talk unnecessary to him.
In foreign policy, Hu undoubtedly believes that China is entitled to a role appropriate to its growing potential. He is not a crusader, however, and will try to accommodate the imperatives of both sides. There is much public discussion of an evolving adversarial U.S.-China relationship. This poses a challenge to statesmanship on both sides of the Pacific. Any American President is obliged to articulate the deepest values of our people, including human rights. Any Chinese President needs to reflect the necessities of his society, including the territorial integrity of a united China. The challenge for the future is whether they can find a way to work together, recognizing that an adversarial relationship will drain both sides, that many current problems can only be solved on a global basis and that a peaceful and prosperous world requires Sino-American cooperation.

During the 1990s, Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and a group of U.S. Senators organized a forum to exchange views among East Asians and Americans. Asked at one session about the role of Islam in politics, Anwar replied, "I have no use for governments which call themselves Islamic and then deny basic rights to half their population."
This devout Muslim leader was an impressive and eloquent advocate of tolerance, democracy and human rights. So we were shocked by his arrest and trial in 1998 on charges of corruption and sodomy. I felt his real "crime" had been to challenge Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, whose impressive record will be forever stained by his treatment of Anwar. I joined Senator Sam Nunn and others to speak out in Anwar's defense. When he was finally released from prison in 2004, U.S. policy on Iraq was unpopular in Malaysia, and Anwar was harshly critical. It would have been easy for him to disown our friendship, but he is not that kind of person. He kept the channels of dialogue open, even while making clear our disagreements.
Anwar, 60, is back in the center of Malaysian politics. The coalition led by his wife Wan Azizah has become the main opposition bloc. His future role can be determined only by Malaysians. One can hope that they will embrace his brand of tolerance, valuing dialogue across political differences, and that this courageous leader will continue to play a leading role on the world stage.

I have friends who predict that Vladimir Putin will find his new position as Russian prime minister a comedown after eight years as President. I doubt it. Putin is more likely to define his job than be defined by it. After our first meetings, in 1999 and 2000, I described him in my journal as "shrewd, confident, hard-working, patriotic, and ingratiating." In the years since, he has become more confident and — to Westerners — decidedly less ingratiating.
Some believe Putin's KGB background explains everything, but his allegiance to the KGB is in turn explained by his intense nationalism — which accounts for his popularity in Russia. Timing matters in history, and Putin has had the benefit of high oil prices and the contrast with his predecessor, Boris Yeltsin. His vision of Russia is that of a great power in the old-fashioned European sense. Such powers have spheres of influence and subjugate lesser powers. At home, they celebrate national traditions and prize collective glory, not individual freedom.
Tolstoy described the 19th century count Mikhail Speransky as a "rigorous-minded man of immense intelligence, who through his energy...had come to power and used it solely for the good of Russia." What one found disconcerting, though, "was Speransky's cold, mirror-like gaze, which let no one penetrate to his soul [and] a too great contempt for people." It is possible to love the idea of a nation without caring too much for its citizens.
It is unlikely that Putin, 55, will wear out his welcome at home anytime soon, as he has nearly done with many democracies abroad. In the meantime, he will remain an irritant to nato, a source of division within Europe and yet another reason for the West to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

Millions of people turn to the Dalai Lama for inspiration, but to whom does he turn? He and his people have struggled all their lives with the audacity of hopelessness. Oppression and exile are their daily bread. Yet the Dalai Lama, 72, remains calm in the face of cruelty. What does he think of the human race? "We are the superior species on Earth but also the biggest troublemakers," he once told me.
China's rulers aren't like the British masters of colonial India, and the Dalai Lama's Gandhiesque nonviolent struggle won't give them twinges of conscience, leading to Tibet's freedom. If anything, Beijing has grown more ruthless in suppressing Tibetan aspirations, as we've seen this Olympic year. And yet he has found a way to think kindly of those who oppress his people and vilify his name. I found him unwilling to show any harshness. He said to me, "I don't dislike the Chinese, only their actions."
To me, the most mystical thing about him is also the most ordinary: the Dalai Lama is happy. He's happy in the midst of chaos and turmoil. The most inspiring thing he ever told me was to ignore all organized faiths and keep to the road of higher consciousness. "Without relying on religion, we look to common sense, common experience and the findings of science for understanding," he said. I do the same thing, but I still marvel at this model of calm and compassion. I'm sure neuroscientists would love to know what's going on inside that brain.
To whom, then, does the Dalai Lama turn for inspiration? It's not a person but a place—beyond I and thou, beyond self and nonself. The wonder isn't that such a place can be found. The wonder is that one man makes it look so easy.

若 真 要 在 學 校 進 行 所 謂 「 愛 國 育 」 ， 那 麼 ， 《 來 生 不 做 中 國 人 》 一 書 ， 就 應 該 列 入 學 生 必 讀 。 因 為 既 然 要 「 愛 國 」 ， 總 得 讓 人 知 道 要 去 「 愛 」 的 「 國 」 是 什 麼 樣 的 國 。 育 ， 當 然 要 說 實 話 ， 這 就 不 能 拿 什 麼 「 五 千 年 文 明 、 地 大 物 博 ， 自 古 以 來 熱 愛 和 平 」 等 等 的 陳 腔 濫 調 去 搪 塞 ， 也 不 可 盲 目 亢 奮 ， 狂 呼 「 崛 起 」 ， 所 以 必 須 告 以 「 國 」 自 古 至 今 的 真 相 ， 這 就 用 得

《 來 》 書 由 台 灣 允 晨 文 化 出 版 ， 書 中 文 章 多 曾 載 於 本 港 《 開 放 》 雜 誌 。 《 開 放 》 是 一 本 極 好 的 政 治 性 雜 誌 ， 向 由 金 鐘 先 生 主 理 ， 不 知 《 開 放 》 有 沒 有 將 鍾 文 在 香 港 出 版 。 《 開 放 》 近 年 來 出 版 的 偉 舉 ， 先 出 版 了 張 戎 著 ， 《 毛 澤 東 ： 鮮 為 人 知 的 故 事 》 一 書 ， 這 本 書 引 證 了 許 多 許 多 真 實 資 料 ， 將 事 實 在 真 實 資 料 之 前 攤 開 來 ， 使 讀 者 了 解 到 ， 歷 史 曾 經 怎 樣 被 扭 曲 。 縱 使 早 已 知 道 強 權 一 貫 扭 曲 事 實 ， 也 難 以 想 像 可 以 扭 曲 到 這 種 程 度 。
又 是 一 本 「 學 生 必 讀 」 ， 可 以 打 救 學 生 心 靈 。 官 方 當 然 不 會 那 樣 做 ， 但 學 生 可 以 自 救 。

Battle Royale II - Requiem 大逃殺II (2003)
依據日本作家高見廣春所撰寫的恐怖小說《大逃殺》為基礎，再進行改編的電影作品。上映前，導演深作欣二公開發表自己罹患的前列腺癌已轉移至脊椎，並誓言在有限的生命裏，將完全投入製作本片。但是，深作欣二實際上僅有在演員遴選及執導一個場景，就不幸因為身患癌症而逝世，故本片實際是其長子深作健太肩負起全面性的陸續工作，所單獨執導完成的作品。

15日，英国《每日电讯报》刊登了一组图片，记录下中国抗震救灾过程中的一个个感人瞬间，并称此次震灾直接影响四川44个县市和1000万百姓，与比利时的人口数量相当。
几天来，有关地震的图片和救灾过程中涌现出的一个个动人故事，正在世界范围内流传。
在地震中痛失妻子的男子用绳子将妻子的尸体绑在背部，送她去太平间。在极大悲痛的折磨中，他努力要给予自己的妻子死后些许的尊严。但是在中国地震后的混乱中，这名男子坚持认为妻子不应该遗弃在那些尖利的碎石中。
因此，他包含着深情，将她的身体与自已绑在一起——然后用摩托车载着他前往当地的太平间 (i.e. funeral home)。
这是大毁灭后存在的人性的象征。

A 2007 thriller film based on the comic book miniseries of the same name. The film is directed by David Slade (the director of Hard Candy).
Differences from the real Barrow
- The number of dark days in Barrow, Alaska is 67 rather than 30.
- The polar night is not characterized by a plunge into and out of total darkness, as suggested by the film; rather a period of bright twilight exists during the midday hours except close to the winter solstice.
- Barrow is not isolated without outside contact while the sun is down as portrayed in the film, but in fact has daily commercial 737 airline service from other cities in Alaska[19] even during the depths of winter. That fact has been noted in a number of sources, including the comic, by AP movie reviewer David Germain[20], and others[21].
- Inupiat people make up 60% of the town, contrasting sharply with the film which presented the town with a largely white population.[22]
- Barrow has an acutal plane route.

Berkeley in the Sixties (1990)
Berkeley in the Sixties takes a fond, if not always loving, look back at the epicenter of leftist political activism during the seventh decade of the 20th century. The free speech movement caught national attention in 1964 when the University of California tried to suppress activists distributing literature and making speeches in an outdoor plaza on campus.
On December 3, Governor Edmund "Pat" Brown ordered the arrest of demonstrators who had occupied the University's Sproul Hall; over 1,500 protestors were taken into custody in what was then the largest mass arrest in U.S. history. The escalation of the Vietnam War kept the winds of dissent blowing in Berkeley, and TV coverage of the 1964 demonstrations and subsequent clashes with the police fueled similar protests on other campuses.
Off-campus, Berkeley was also home to a strong chapter of the Black Panther Party, which offered a more violent alternative to the established civil rights organizations. Vintage clips of the demonstrations and official reactions to them from Brown and his successor, Ronald Reagan, are supplemented by contemporary interviews with activists and observers who offer both reminiscences of and perspectives on the period.

集結號 (THE ASSEMBLY) (2008)
该影片以1948年的淮海战役为背景，描述在一次狙击战中，主人公谷子地作为解放军中原野战军独二师一三九团三营九连的连指挥官率领区区47人将若干倍于己的国军85军某部一直牢牢拖住，击退对方三次进攻，直到除谷子地外的全部人员阵亡。其上司团长刘泽水要求其听到集结号后才可撤退；但是直到战斗结束，谷子地晕死后，也没有听到集结号声（谷子地已经受伤并影响听力）。后谷子地虽回到中共军队，却因战事连绵，部队多次改编，无从找到原部队并证实死去战友的战功（此次战斗中的牺牲者都只是被记录为失踪）。无奈下，谷子地冒充炮兵，在对年轻炮兵营长赵二斗倾述后，得以炊事兵的身份留在部队。在随后的朝鲜战争中，为挽救误踩地雷的赵二斗，并确保其完成炮击重要桥梁的任务，再次受伤并影响到视力。战争结束后，谷子地继续查找原部队和战友的尸骨。在赵二斗（后升为团长）的帮助下，谷子地见到看守刘泽水（已牺牲）所在烈士陵园的原团部司号员，才得知由于主力部队遭受突袭，团长刘泽水根本没有下令吹响集结号。在诸多战士阵亡后若干年，谷子地最终找到了原团政委，证实了这一次战斗经历；经地方军区的认可，追认所有47名牺牲战士为革命烈士，并授予所有9连官兵解放奖章，在他们曾经战斗的地方，终于矗立出一个纪念他们的碑塔。

由 內 地 著 名 導 演 陳 為 軍 執 導 、 入 圍 今 屆 奧 斯 卡 並 多 次 獲 得 國 際 獎 項 的 紀 錄 片 《 請 為 我 投 票 》 （ 海 外 播 出 時 片 名 為 「 Please Vote for Me 」 ， 香 港 譯 《 請 投 我 一 票 》 ） ， 慘 遭 北 京 封 殺 ， 迄 今 無 緣 與 內 地 民 眾 見 面 ， 成 為 又 一 個 因 「 政 治 不 正 確 」 慘 遭 當 局 封 殺 的 例 子 。 內 地 知 名 學 者 郭 泉 稱 ， 片 子 一 開 始 就 被 中 國 官 方 視 為 「 毒 草 」 ， 因 為 它 向 中 國 老 百 姓 講 出 了 「 民 主 只 需 要 8 歲 智 商 」 的 事 實 ， 在 這 個 事 實 面 前 ， 共 產 黨 一 直 宣 揚 中 國 人 「 不 適 合 選 舉 」 的 理 念 不 攻 自 破 。
《 請 為 我 投 票 》 由 七 年 前 曾 拍 攝 河 南 愛 滋 家 庭 紀 錄 片 《 好 死 不 如 賴 活 》 一 舉 成 名 的 武 漢 電 視 台 製 作 人 陳 為 軍 拍 攝 ， 片 長 約 50 分 鐘 ， 記 述 武 漢 市 常 青 第 一 小 學 三 年 級 一 班 學 生 舉 行 班 長 選 舉 ， 三 名 候 選 人 在 父 母 協 助 下 如 何 「 你 爭 我 鬥 」 的 過 程 。 由 於 紀 錄 片 生 動 深 刻 的 紀 實 性 ， 片 子 贏 得 美 國 Silverdocs 紀 錄 電 影 節 最 佳 主 題 獎 等 四 個 重 要 國 際 獎 項 ， 並 入 選 今 年 3 月 香 港 國 際 電 影 節 的 紀 錄 片 （ 非 競 賽 性 ） 部 份 。
與 中 共 宣 傳 背 道 而 馳
據 了 解 ， 該 片 在 去 年 初 拍 攝 時 ， 曾 獲 內 地 官 方 媒 體 包 括 新 華 網 、 人 民 網 等 娛 樂 頻 道 的 廣 泛 報 道 ， 但 片 子 完 成 後 ， 內 地 卻 悄 無 聲 息 ， 直 到 它 於 去 年 底 獲 奧 斯 卡 提 名 ， 並 先 後 獲 得 一 系 列 國 際 獎 項 ， 引 起 海 外 關 注 後 ， 內 地 娛 樂 界 才 傳 出 消 息 ： 該 片 已 遭 到 北 京 的 封 殺 ， 被 列 為 禁 片 之 一 。 但 消 息 並 無 指 出 被 禁 的 真 正 原 因 。

蒙 ， 與 中 共 指 老 百 姓 不 適 合 選 舉 的 宣 傳 背 道 而 馳 。 他 說 ， 共 產 黨 也 講 民 主 ， 胡 錦 濤 在 法 國 曾 公 開 說 「 沒 有 民 主 就 沒 有 社 會 主 義 」 ， 但 共 產 黨 講 的 民 主 是 老 百 姓 可 以 表 達 一 些 觀 點 ， 但 不 能 顛 覆 共 產 黨 執 政 地 位 ， 絕 非 紀 錄 片 中 所 說 ： 老 百 姓 可 以 選 擇 執 政 黨 。 郭 泉 指 ， 片 子 在 內 地 被 禁 上 映 ， 但 盜 版 到 處 有 賣 ， 傳 播 甚 廣 。
告 訴 老 百 姓 可 選 擇 領 導
郭 泉 說 ： 「 片 子 告 訴 老 百 姓 ， 甚 麼 是 民 主 ， 民 主 就 是 老 百 姓 可 以 選 擇 你 的 領 導 ， 如 果 大 家 看 了 片 子 明 白 這 個 道 理 ， 共 產 黨 的 本 質 就 會 被 人 民 看 透 ， 所 以 ， 它 當 然 不 願 意 讓 更 多 老 百 姓 看 到 這 個 片 子 了 。 」
而 該 片 的 製 作 者 陳 為 軍 較 早 前 曾 透 露 ， 他 的 調 查 發 現 ， 大 部 份 內 地 小 朋 友 都 想 當 官 ， 是 引 發 他 拍 這 部 紀 錄 片 的 想 法 ， 於 是 拍 下 他 們 用 民 主 方 式 選 班 長 的 過 程 ， 「 看 看 小 朋 友 的 民 主 意 識 和 想 法 」 。

現 年 39 歲 的 導 演 陳 為 軍 早 前 接 受 《 中 國 青 年 報 》 訪 問 時 曾 透 露 ， 開 拍 《 請 為 我 投 票 》 背 後 有 故 事 ， 他 拍 攝 的 武 漢 常 青 第 一 小 學 ， 原 來 是 他 同 事 的 兒 子 就 讀 的 學 校 ， 偶 然 機 會 下 ， 令 他 萌 生 拍 攝 該 片 的 念 頭 。
陳 為 軍 表 示 ， 他 任 職 武 漢 電 視 台 的 節 目 製 作 女 同 事 的 兒 子 成 成 （ 片 中 班 長 候 選 人 之 一 ） ， 前 年 春 節 一 塊 吃 年 飯 時 ， 談 起 自 己 的 理 想 ， 小 小 年 紀 的 他 說 ： 「 想 當 國 家 主 席 ， 可 以 管 大 家 ， 比 如 自 己 不 會 開 車 ， 到 時 候 全 國 人 民 都 不 准 開 車 。 」
陳 為 軍 後 來 調 查 發 現 ， 大 部 份 小 朋 友 原 來 都 想 當 官 ， 令 初 為 人 父 不 久 的 他 十 分 困 惑 ， 想 起 自 己 的 同 輩 ， 小 時 候 都 只 想 當 醫 生 、 作 家 、 科 學 家 ， 十 分 多 元 化 。 進 而 他 又 發 現 ， 現 今 的 小 孩 子 都 很 自 我 自 私 ， 令 他 決 定 用 紀 錄 片 的 方 式 ， 反 映 這 些 現 象 ， 反 映 小 朋 友 的 民 主 和 集 體 意 識 。

《 請 為 我 投 票 》 的 片 頭 挺 出 人 意 料 。 面 對 「 甚 麼 叫 民 主 」 、 「 甚 麼 叫 投 票 」 的 問 題 ， 孩 子 們 一 臉 茫 然 ， 有 些 害 羞 地 回 答 ： 「 不 知 道 。 」 就 是 這 樣 一 群 不 知 道 民 主 、 投 票 定 義 的 孩 子 ， 進 行 了 一 場 認 認 真 真 的 班 長 競 選 。 記 錄 這 一 過 程 的 電 影 ， 竟 然 遭 當 局 封 殺 ， 暴 露 了 中 共 對 民 主 只 是 葉 公 好 龍 的 本 質 。
怕 刺 激 成 人 的 民 主 慾 望
中 共 高 層 智 囊 俞 可 平 去 年 初 發 表 《 民 主 是 個 好 東 西 》 ， 加 上 中 共 十 七 大 承 諾 推 行 政 治 改 革 ， 令 外 界 以 為 中 共 可 能 加 快 政 制 改 革 。 然 而 ， 無 論 葉 公 如 何 裝 成 愛 龍 成 癖 ， 一 見 到 真 龍 就 嚇 得 失 魂 落 魄 ， 這 正 是 當 局 封 殺 《 請 為 我 投 票 》 的 寫 照 。
為 甚 麼 連 小 學 生 競 選 班 長 的 紀 錄 電 影 都 要 禁 播 ？
一 是 怕 刺 激 成 人 的 民 主 慾 望 。 有 內 地 民 眾 在 網 上 看 過 紀 錄 片 後 感 嘆 ： 「 我 是 孩 子 的 時 候 ， 班 長 就 是 民 主 選 舉 的 啊 ； 我 不 是 孩 子 的 時 候 ， 發 現 沒 有 甚 麼 是 可 以 民 主 選 舉 的 啦 。 」
二 是 怕 紀 錄 片 的 力 量 。 三 位 班 長 候 選 人 由 老 師 指 定 ， 他 們 使 出 類 似 賄 選 等 茅 招 ， 則 是 因 家 長 的 策 劃 和 支 持 ， 活 脫 脫 是 中 國 特 色 的 「 欽 定 候 選 人 」 和 社 會 爾 虞 我 詐 的 縮 影 ， 這 些 都 不 是 當 局 樂 意 公 之 於 世 的 。 而 《 請 為 我 投 票 》 的 導 演 陳 為 軍 ， 在 2001 年 也 拍 過 記 錄 中 國 愛 滋 病 人 悲 慘 生 活 的 《 好 死 不 如 賴 活 》 ， 並 奪 得 美 國 廣 播 電 視 文 化 成 就 獎 等 ， 但 迄 今 仍 未 能 在 國 內 上 映 。

The film is directed by Billy Ray and is based on the story of Eric O'Neill, an upstart FBI operative working under Robert Hanssen, an agent convicted of spying for the Soviet Union (and, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia) for 15 years.
Robert Philip Hanssen (b. April 18, 1944) is a former American FBI agent who spied for the Soviet Union and Russia against the U.S. for more than 20 years. He is serving a life sentence in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day at the Supermax Federal Penitentiary in Florence, Colorado.[1]
Hanssen was arrested on February 18, 2001, at Foxstone Park[2] near his home in Vienna, Virginia, charged with selling American secrets to Moscow for more than $1.4 million in cash and diamonds over a 22-year period.[3] On July 6, 2001, he pleaded guilty to 15 counts of espionage in federal court.[4][5] He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without parole. His activities have been described as "possibly the worst intelligence disaster in US history."[6]

雪山獅子旗
雪山獅子旗的意涵：
- 中心之雪山象徵雪域西藏。
- 空中六道紅色的光芒象徵西藏民族原始的色、穆、冬、黨、哲、紮六大氏族。
- 紅色光芒與藍色天空象徵紅黑兩大護法護持政教合一事業。
- 雪山頂上升起的太陽之光芒四射象徵雪域西藏之全部眾生享受自由、信仰、富裕、幸福與公平公正。
- 雪山上的兩隻雪獅象徵政教合一事業戰勝一切。
- 高舉之具三色的寶焰象徵西藏人民永遠敬信和頂禮「佛、法、僧」三寶。
- 雪獅手中所持具兩色的如意寶象徵遵循十善法和十六人法為核心之正教中的取捨善惡之法。
- 黃色邊框象徵佛法長駐人世直至普渡眾生事業完成。
雪山獅子旗點得來？
根據西藏流亡政府官方網頁，雪山獅子旗的來歷要追溯至唐朝，當年西藏軍隊各自擁有軍旗，後來為統一起見，於是訂製「雪山獅子旗」作正規軍旗。直到一九六四年，達賴喇嘛於印度成立西藏流亡政府，決定將此旗作為標誌，由此漸被人等同為藏獨旗幟。
雪獅代表咩？
藏族民眾自稱是雪獅之子，就如漢族自視為龍的傳人一樣；這種觀念，據藏民表示，很大程度是繼承古印度文化傳統。古印度人視雄獅為國家權力象徵，而早期佛教亦選用獅子作為佛陀釋迦牟尼的象徵，佛陀又名「釋迦僧格」（即釋迦族的雄獅），足可證明獅子被奉為神獸。
點解支旗得三條黃邊？
有部分藏獨示威者高舉的雪山獅子旗，四邊皆被黃邊框
，有藏民苦笑，「久唔久都見
示威者搞錯。」
真正的雪山獅子旗只有三邊黃框，右邊並沒圍框，這象徵佛法長駐世界，而三條黃邊代表佛教在神、修羅及人界並存。
此旗亦道出西藏的地理文化，中心的雪山，代表雪域西藏；雪山頂上升起的太陽，寓意西藏眾生應享的權力，空中六道紅色光芒，代表西藏民族原來的六大氏族，藍色則是天空。

DENUAN : 在EX內成功描寫出這位原著漫畫中，全身充滿戰鬥細胞的女主角，她那種戰鬥中橫衝直撞如脫韁野馬，誰也攔不住；但在戰鬥之外，卻會把所有心思都放在心愛人身上，隨時隨地都在注意、擔心布里艾諾斯的小女人性格。
也不得不承認，在EX中，狄娜確實比第一集電影中更漂亮。或許是因為3D畫風改變，狄娜在片中五官修飾得更為細緻，動作場面中女性線條也不時流露出性感，加上許多精心設計服裝搭配，讓她在片中更有女人味。由PRADA所設計的服裝，在劇中其實都只出現一下
BRIAREOS : 漫畫中本來就很魁武，在3D立體化後，因為光影表現讓他的體態看起來更有份量，重量感與厚實感更為強烈，讓人更容易感受到那具身體的強壯與力量。
劇中因為擔心自己身體狀況，無法保護心愛女人的不安與焦躁，又看到彷彿是另一個新生自我的失落感，加起來產生的各種複雜糾結情緒，
TEREUS : EX中第二位男主角，也算是半個主角。拷貝布里艾諾斯DNA模組所製造出來的生化人。有著跟他相同的個性與戰鬥力。片中泰瑞斯同時扮演著布里艾諾斯過去幻影與未來可能性。因為他的存在，也在片中不斷突顯出，男女主角對於彼此牽絆有多強烈。同時他也算是布里艾諾斯在片中，自己不斷跟自己戰鬥具體化的表現。
Hitomi & Yoshitsune : 在原作漫畫中就是配角中很重要的倆人，電影版中亦然。兩人造型跟第一部都有著極大改變。
兩人在EX中，依然扮演著男女主角在各種事件中，給予全力協助的好伙伴。
ATHENA & NIKE :同樣是APPLESEED迷熟悉的人物。在EX中倆人都變漂亮了。

Appleseed: Ex Machina
我 愛 電 影 ， 什 麼 類 型 的 都 喜 歡 ， 包 括 動 畫 片 ， 而 近 來 看 到 ， 最 突 出 的 一 部 ， 叫 《 Appleseed: Ex Machina 》 。
吸 引 我 去 看 的 先 是 吳 宇 森 這 位 老 友 的 名 字 。 什 麼 ？ 吳 宇 森 也 去 拍 動 畫 片 了 ？ 原 來 他 當 的 只 是 監 製 的 地 位 ， 導 演 叫 荒 牧 伸 志 Shinji Aramaki 。 漫 畫 的 原 著 ， 則 是 日 本 動 畫 界 的 一 代 宗 師 ， 名 叫 士 郎 正 宗 Shirow Masamune ， 他 拍 的 動 畫 片 《 Ghost in the Shell 》 實 在 好 看 得 不 得 了 。
不 過 士 郎 正 宗 經 常 扮 高 深 ， 劇 情 是 難 懂 的 ， 荒 牧 則 是 平 易 近 人 ， 說 故 事 本 領 也 高 ， 他 在 第 一 部 《 Appleseed 》 中 只 講 未 來 的 特 警 隊 ， 一 個 女 的 ， 和 她 的 機 器 人 拍 檔 的 情 節 。
那 部 戲 只 用 傳 統 的 2D Animation 動 畫 拍 的 ， 深 度 感 欠 缺 。 這 套 影 片

Smiley Face (2007)
A 2007 comedy film. It is the ninth feature film directed by Gregg Araki and was written by Dylan Haggerty.
Sunshine Daydream, With Pointed Point of View
"Smiley Face," about a pot-addled would-be actress stumbling through a long, weird day in Los Angeles, is a contradiction in terms: a "stoner" comedy with a purpose.
Directed by Gregg Araki from a screenplay by Dylan Haggerty, the movie at first seems a psychedelic lark, in the spirit of "The Big Lebowski," "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle" and other works distinguished by picaresque narratives and cumulus clouds of marijuana smoke.
Mr. Araki, a trailblazer of early '90s queer cinema, can stage a non sequitur with the best of them. He gets plenty of opportunities thanks to his lead actress, the "Scary Movie" star Anna Faris, whose freakishly committed performance as Jane F. suggests Amy Adams's princess from "Enchanted" dropped into a Cheech and Chong movie.
Jane is a giggly, flirty goofball whose perpetual buzz is cranked up several notches when she scarfs a plateful of cannabis-spiked muffins baked by her roommate. Intending to bake a replacement batch, she orders a large amount of product from a dealer (a dreadlocked, droll Adam Brody) whom she can't afford to pay; accidentally destroys her cellphone while cooking the muffins; then arrives late to an audition for a strait-laced casting agent who reports her drug use to the police; and so on.
Despite its laid-back script, "Smiley Face" is as prankishly political as Mr. Araki's "Doom Generation," evincing a deep unease with the media-saturated capitalist nation that Jane crawls inside her bong to escape.
The film depicts Jane's habit as pathetic even as it plays for laughs. At the same time, though "Smiley Face" suggests that the "straight" characters Jane encounters — the casting director (Jane Lynch); a bullying beat cop (Michael Shamus Wiles); a college professor's wife (Marion Ross) from whom Jane steals an original copy of Marx and Engels's "Communist Manifesto"; a couple of amiably clueless meat delivery men (Danny Trejo and John Cho); the humorless Brevin (John Krasinski of NBC's "Office"), who likes getting his teeth cleaned because it makes him feel "prosperous" — are in thrall to an even more powerful drug: the myth of the American dream.
At one point Jane, who has somehow ended up at the meat-packing plant that employs the delivery men, deflects a supervisor's ire by claiming to be a union organizer, then fantasizes launching into a Marxist soliloquy about industrial oppression of labor. Mr. Araki intercuts Jane's rant with unsettling close-ups of meat being sliced, ground and liquefied.
The film's title is drawn from a scene in which Jane envisions the sun as a smiley face. The implication is subtle but clear: Americans fancy themselves free-willed strivers who live in the best of all possible worlds, but they're really sentient vegetables, rooted in comfort and nourished by manufactured images of bliss. Jane's apathy-as-rebellion recalls a quotation from Stella Adler: "A junkie is someone who uses their body to tell society that something is wrong."

練習曲 Island Etude (2006)
沒有激動人心的對白或自省，也沒有克服重重困難的經歷。看到的，是一個個分離又有點串連的個體，路途上的朋友們都描寫得很樸素，都是真實地生活在這世界的人的經歷。他們不是偉人或名人，但都有著他們對家庭、對理想、對生命的熱誠，都在這壯麗的風光下活出他們的人生。看罷《練習曲》，看了明相的旅程與他們那一段段短暫的相聚，似乎重拾了一些都市遺忘了的人情味，一種存在於人與人之間的微妙聯係，一種能夠讓陌生的同路人一起打氣的共鳴。

曾經，我困惑電影還能帶給觀眾什麼？
「創造一種新的，可能的視覺敘事」這是電影《練習曲》嘗試的說故事方式。
不倚賴情節的鋪排，運用台灣沿海的自然景觀與特質，給故事發生應有的情境與氣氛，也賦予電影進行的節奏和張力；我重視電影特有的基本魅力：觀眾觀影時，當下的期待與驚奇。
旅行的渴望，一直是人類心靈深處不可或缺的遊戲；一段旅程帶給旅人的意義，就如同觀眾經歷一部電影的獲得。
《練習曲》是部旅行的電影，企圖用一百分鐘，完成一趟沿海環島的旅行。
劇情簡介
旅行，永遠是遇見真實故事最好的時刻。一個聽障男孩決定在大四畢業前，揹著吉他騎腳踏車旅行，一百分鐘的電影、七天六夜的旅程，銀幕上一路展開的風景，也隨著男孩所經歷的點滴故事，走進這片土地的深處，描繪出屬於福爾摩沙的影像地圖。《悲情城市》資深攝影師陳懷恩首度執導的真摯之作，壯闊且細膩的攝影，捕捉了真正屬於台灣的人文風景。
從第一天晚上說起，明相在太麻里的海邊紮營，練習彈吉他，雖然他是個聽障者，但依舊對聲音有著無比的興趣。
次日清晨，他沿著台11線走，遇到來東海岸拍攝MV的一群人，他們記錄下明相騎車的片段。而後，明相在北回歸線地標處休息時，認識一名要去花蓮看母親的單車騎士，當晚明相住在騎士母親家，他感受到這是個拆散的家庭，騎士母親有著淡淡的哀愁。
次日明相挑戰以艱困著名的蘇花公路，吃盡苦頭，在中途漢本車站，遇到一名匈牙利女孩，獨自旅行，女孩錯過了去花蓮的普通車，在明相的協助下，先北走再南下。也許因為語言不通，兩人用筆談，對於聽障者而言，反而輕鬆自在。
第四天的北海岸之旅，他看到衝浪者阿沅的憧憬，聽到關心社區改造者對社會的批判，閱讀到在地人阿圖，一步一腳印的童年時光。
當晚住在海邊的國小，感受到即將退休劉老師的照顧與鼓勵。想彈吉他給老師聽時，弦卻斷了。
第五天，他沿著西岸，由北往南走，這兒上演著社會的變遷，一群失業女工在無奈中的喘息，藉著抗爭租來的遊覽車，順便旅遊。同理噴畫的少年的心情，交換各自工具，噴畫、彈吉他，宣洩年輕的狂放。
順道去看看阿公阿嗎，用過往不同的方式回到老家，明相讀到過去家人的遭遇，那段因明相聽障，全家陷入苦悶的歷史。
而當下街坊鄰居談論最重要的話題，就是年度大事，白沙屯媽祖遶境。
次日清晨，祖孫二人騎著鐵馬，參加廟會盛事。
最後一天的旅程，不如想像中的順利，他的老捷安特，在荒蕪的飛沙，爆胎了。也許承蒙媽祖的庇蔭，適時出現一名也在騎車環島的中年男人，因著他的幫助，讓明相得以完成旅行。而兩人短暫的同行，也令男子憶起：與已故同窗相偕騎車的美好時光。
候鳥返家，台西落日，預告了旅行終將結束。
回到宿舍，收到MV拍攝小組，記錄明相的片段。修好吉他，彈著練習曲，回憶這七天的旅行。
第一天，他踩著南台灣沿岸美景到了台東，在太麻里，明相悄悄地發現，一位老人一生情感的紀錄。胡德夫海邊演唱"太平洋的風"，奏起這個故事旅行的開場。

Michael Clayton (2007)
A 2007 American dramatic legal thriller film written and directed by Tony Gilroy and produced by Sydney Pollack. It stars George Clooney, Tom Wilkinson, and Tilda Swinton. It chronicles the attempts of attorney Michael Clayton to cope with a colleague's apparent mental breakdown and the corruption and murderous intrigue within a major client of his law firm that was sued in a class-action case involving toxic agrochemicals.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007)
A 2007 film directed by painter-director Julian Schnabel, written by Ronald Harwood and starring French actor Mathieu Amalric. It is based on the French memoir Le Scaphandre et le Papillon by Jean-Dominique Bauby.
The film describes Bauby's life after suffering a massive stroke at the age of 43, which left him with a condition known as locked-in syndrome. The condition paralyzed him; his only remaining means of communication was the blinking of his left eyelid. The film premiered in competition at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival on May 22, where Schnabel won, two weeks later, the Award for Best Director. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, and won a BAFTA award. Schnabel also won Best Director at the 65th Golden Globe Awards, where the film won Best Foreign Language Film. Due to the fact that the film was produced by an American company, it was ineligible for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Jean-Dominique Bauby (April 23, 1952 – March 9, 1997) was a well-known French journalist and author and editor of the French fashion magazine ELLE.
On December 8, 1995 at the age of 43, Bauby suffered a massive stroke. When he woke up twenty days later, he found he was entirely speechless; he could only blink his left eyelid. This rare condition is called Locked-in Syndrome, a condition wherein the mental faculties are intact but the entire body is paralyzed. Bauby also lost 60 pounds in the first 20 weeks after his stroke.[
Despite his condition, he wrote the book The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by blinking when the correct letter was reached by a person slowly reciting the alphabet over and over again. Bauby had to compose and edit the book entirely in his head, and convey it one letter at a time. To make dictation more efficient, Bauby had his interlocutor read from a special alphabet which consisted of the letters ordered in accordance with their frequency in the French language. The book was published in France in 1997. Bauby died just ten days later of pneumonia. He is buried in a family grave at the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris, France.

台 灣 作 家 柏 楊 先 生 逝 世 。 柏 楊 的 影 響 力 巨 大 ， 柏 楊 是 一 位 多 產 的 作 家 ， 卻 以 一 冊 《 醜 陋 的 中 國 人 》 風 行 二 十 年 ， 還 有 英 譯 本 行 銷 國 際 。
研 究 中 國 人 口 質 素 的 問 題 ， 魯 迅 、 林 語 堂 、 胡 適 等 早 有 論 述 ， 但 又 以 柏 楊 引 起 的 迴 響 最 大 ， 因 為 柏 楊 比 魯 迅 和 林 語 堂 更 為 深 刻 。 柏 楊 的 白 話 文 功 夫 比 魯 迅 高 超 ， 《 醜 陋 的 中 國 人 》 對 中 華 民 族 的 許 多 共 性 ， 膾 炙 人 口 ， 因 為 讀 柏 楊 這 本 名 著 ， 永 遠 都 不 過 時 ：
「 中 國 人 是 天 下 最 容 易 膨 脹 的 民 族 ， 因 為 『 器 小 易 盈 』 ， 見 識 太 少 ， 心 胸 太 窄 ， 稍 微 有 一 點 氣 候 ， 就 認 為 天 地 雖 大 ， 已 裝 他 不 下 。 」
「 中 國 人 打 一 架 ， 可 是 三 百 年 的 仇 恨 。 沒 有 包 容 的 性 格 ， 如 此 般 狹 窄 的 心 胸 ， 一 方 面 是 絕 對 的 自 卑 ， 一 方 面 是 絕 對 的 自 傲 ， 獨 獨 沒 有 自 尊 。 自 卑 的 時 候 ， 覺 得 自 己 是 一 團 狗 屎 ， 和 權 勢 走 得 越 近 ， 臉 上 的 笑 容 越 多 ， 變 成 了 一 種 人 格 分 裂 的 奇 異 動 物 。 」
記 者 訪 問 柏 楊 ： 「 你 認 為 那 個 民 族 對 全 人 類 的 貢 獻 最 大 ？ 」 柏 楊 說 ： 「 我 認 為 是 安 格 羅 撒 克 遜 。 第 一 ， 他 們 創 立 了 議 會 政 治 制 度 ， 使 司 法 走 上 清 明 。 凡 英 國 的 屬 地 獨 立 之 後 ， 都 用 英 國 的 法 治 ， 你 說 ， 這 個 民 族 是 不 是 有 貢 獻 ？ 我 們 中 華 民 族 在 五 百 年 來 ， 貢 獻 甚 麼 ？ 」
柏 楊 之 心 直 口 快 ， 不 知 含 蓄 ， 自 然 刺 痛 了 很 多 中 國 人 的 脆 弱 心 靈 ， 指 柏 楊 「 詆 譭 」 同 類 。 不 錯 ， 柏 楊 所 說 的 「 醜 陋 的 中 國 人 」 ， 如 果 指 十 三 億 之 中 的 每 一 個 ， 未 必 完 全 精 確 ， 因 為 在 六 十 年 代 的 中 國 大 陸 ， 也 有 一 些 優 秀 的 中 國 人 如 林 昭 和 遇 羅 克 敢 講 真 話 ， 堅 持 了 人 性 的 尊 嚴 。 上 一 代 的 中 國 人 也 有 很 優 秀 的 品 種 ： 畫 家 傅 抱 石 、 豐 子 愷 ， 知 識 分 子 陳 寅 恪 ， 還 有 在 柏 楊 蒙 
下 獄 時 挺 身 營 救 的 物 理 學 家 孫 觀 漢 ， 也 數 之 不 盡 ， 即 使 今 日 的 海 外 ， 也 有 一 位 中 國 女 留 學 生 王 千 源 ， 在 憤 青 的 瘋 狂 攻 擊 之 下 維 持 獨 立 思 考 。 王 千 源 小 姐 就 不 是 醜 陋 的 中 國 人 ， 一 大 堆 面 目 猙 獰 、 向 王 小 姐 發 出 追 殺 令 的 中 國 憤 青 才 是 。 柏 楊 和 胡 適 等 擁 有 國 際 視 野 的 知 識 分 子 ， 也 一 樣 是 很 優 秀 的 中 國 人 。 柏 楊 指 的 是 一 種 民 族 的 共 相 ， 歸 納 為 「 髒 、 亂 、 吵 」 三 大 令 人 厭 惡 的 生 活 特 徵 ， 源 自 二 千 年 秦 始 皇 以 來 形 成 帝 皇 奴 臣 的 「 文 化 醬 缸 」 ， 令 中 國 人 的 思 維 停 滯 而 酸 腐 。 令 中 國 政 府 也 論 斷 「 中 國 人 民 的 育 素 質 差 ， 不 適 宜 像 西 方 一 樣 搞 議 會 民 主 」 ， 很 奇 異 地 也 與 柏 楊 相 同 。 罵 柏 楊 詆 譭 中 國 人 的 人 ， 敢 不 敢 罵 統 治 他 們 的 主 人 。 柏 楊 說 ： 「 最 大 的 醜 陋 ， 是 不 知 道 自 己 的 醜 陋 」 ， 可 以 為 柏 楊 的 中 國 人 研 究 的 終 極 結 論 。
柏 楊 的 論 點 ， 永 遠 都 那 麼 In ， 那 麼 潮 ， 令 人 深 有 發 。 柏 楊 說 ： 「 美 國 有 甚 麼 ， 中 國 立 刻 也 有 甚 麼 。 你 有 憲 法 ， 我 也 有 憲 法 ， 但 中 國 的 憲 法 像 戲 院 門 口 的 海 報 ， 誰 上 一 次 台 ， 就 變 一 次 憲 法 ， 那 又 如 何 使 人 相 信 憲 法 ？ 淮 河 之 南 的 橘 子 ， 拿 到 淮 河 之 北 ， 就 成 了 枳 子 。 中 國 的 文 化 就 是 淮 河 之 北 的 文 化 ， 逾 淮 而 枳 ， 好 像 是 一 個 美 國 蘋 果 ， 只 要 搬 到 中 國 ， 就 立 刻 變 成 了 
屎 橛 ， 醬 缸 的 侵 蝕 力 很 強 。 」
這 是 一 種 基 因 。 何 止 是 蘋 果 和 橘 子 ， 互 聯 網 也 一 樣 。 美 國 人 發 明 的 互 聯 網 ， 本 來 應 該 用 於 文 化 和 知 識 的 交 流 ， 用 於 建 立 一 個 中 國 人 自 己 也 懂 得 用 嘴 巴 說 的 「 和 諧 世 界 」 。 但 中 國 留 學 生 王 千 源 只 因 為 在 海 外 有 一 點 點 不 同 於 民 族 主 義 情 緒 的 個 人 意 見 ， 針 對 一 個 弱 質 女 孩 ， 她 的 同 胞 用 互 聯 網 來 散 播 追 殺 令 ， 把 她 的 照 片 、 地 址 、 個 人 資 料 在 網 絡 散 發 ， 暴 徒 在 王 千 源 在 青 島 的 家 居 潑 糞 。 高 科 技 傳 來 中 國 形 成 心 靈 的 閉 塞 ， 令 中 國 人 自 我 加 強 仇 恨 ， 柏 楊 先 生 的 真 知 灼 見 ， 真 是 精 確 無 匹 。
柏 楊 是 一 個 醫 生 ， 他 看 出 了 其 中 的 病 態 基 因 ： 「 這 就 是 中 國 文 化 的 問 題 ─ ─ 醬 缸 可 以 消 滅 智 商 。 至 於 醬 缸 如 何 形 成 ？ 可 能 是 受 儒 家 思 想 影 響 所 致 。 儒 家 思 想 自 從 定 於 一 尊 之 後 ， 經 過 一 百 多 年 ， 到 了 東 漢 ， 成 了 一 個 模 式 ， 學 生 只 可 以 圍 繞 老 師 所 說 的 話 團 團 轉 。 到 了 明 王 朝 、 清 王 朝 ， 如 果 官 方 規 定 用 朱 熹 的 話 解 釋 ， 就 絕 不 可 用 王 陽 明 的 話 解 釋 ， 根 本 不 允 許 知 識 分 子 思 考 ， 他 們 已 經 完 全 替 你 思 考 好 了 ， 時 間 一 久 ， 知 識 分 子 的 思 考 能 力 衰 退 。 沒 有 思 考 能 力 ， 也 沒 有 想 像 能 力 ， 沒 有 想 像 能 力 ， 也 沒 有 鑑 賞 能 力 。 」
柏 楊 一 直 生 活 在 台 灣 ， 此 一 心 得 ， 有 值 得 補 充 之 處 ： 馬 克 思 、 列 寧 、 毛 澤 東 說 過 的 話 ， 也 不 准 任 何 人 來 質 疑 ， 後 來 才 有 鄧 小 平 號 稱 的 所 謂 「 解 放 思 想 」 。 相 對 於 毛 澤 東 的 中 國 ， 鄧 小 平 是 敢 於 挑 戰 質 疑 的 唯 一 人 。 「 不 管 黑 貓 白 貓 ， 能 捉 老 鼠 的 就 是 好 貓 」 、 「 貧 窮 不 是 社 會 主 義 」 ， 這 種 話 在 西 方 ， 是 三 歲 小 孩 都 知 道 的 普 通 常 識 ， 不 值 一 論 ， 但 在 一 九 七 八 年 的 中 國 大 陸 ， 效 應 卻 有 如 山 崩 地 陷 。 舉 國 都 口 瞪 目 呆 
了 眼 ， 然 後 又 展 開 了 「 到 底 該 姓 資 還 是 姓 社 」 的 大 爭 論 。
以 秦 始 皇 為 尊 ， 以 朱 姓 的 明 朝 家 族 為 大 ， 後 來 又 以 滿 清 異 族 為 首 ， 然 後 又 以 列 寧 和 史 達 林 的 蘇 俄 為 師 。 用 柏 楊 的 話 來 評 析 ： 這 個 醬 缸 阻 礙 了 一 個 民 族 的 思 考 力 鑑 賞 力 ， 還 有 基 本 的 判 斷 力 ， 在 此 一 漫 長 過 程 中 ， 中 國 的 「 知 識 分 子 」 在 一 團 醬 一 起 醃 泡 ， 成 為 今 日 的 奇 怪 局 面 。
由 於 柏 楊 所 說 的 「 醬 缸 效 應 」 ， 中 國 無 法 產 生 民 主 ， 今 天 正 是 「 五 四 運 動 」 的 紀 念 日 ， 「 五 四 」 提 出 的 口 號 正 是 民 主 。 相 當 詭 異 的 卻 是 ： 觀 之 今 日 大 陸 憤 青 追 殺 王 千 源 、 圍 攻 家 樂 福 ， 一 發 不 可 收 拾 的 狂 躁 情 緒 ， 中 國 人 自 己 證 明 了 不 可 以 、 也 沒 有 資 格 可 以 享 受 西 方 的 民 主 ， 反 過 來 ， 還 要 一 個 「 獨 裁 」 的 中 共 ， 來 勸 喻 要 「 理 性 愛 國 」 ， 今 天 的 中 國 ， 以 「 愛 國 」 建 立 新 的 言 論 獨 裁 ， 而 且 這 一 次 不 由 毛 澤 東 來 發 動 紅 衞 兵 ， 而 基 本 上 是 自 發 。 仇 恨 和 偏 狹 ， 取 代 了 寬 容 和 理 性 ， 如 此 國 家 一 旦 「 民 主 」 了 ， 王 千 源 的 家 馬 上 會 被 燒 掉 ， 她 的 父 母 會 被 暴 民 打 死 ， 王 千 源 一 旦 回 國 ， 有 很 大 的 機 會 被 凌 遲 碎 割 ， 其 肉 賣 至 十 文 錢 一 小 片 ， 像 明 末 名 將 袁 崇 煥 的 結 局 。
這 樣 下 去 ， 如 何 收 拾 ？ 這 是 中 國 執 政 者 的 事 ， 不 在 本 文 探 討 範 圍 。 柏 楊 的 論 述 ， 也 不 是 沒 有 缺 陷 ： 譬 如 他 由 此 而 否 定 中 國 語 文 ， 不 但 主 張 簡 體 ， 中 文 還 要 拉 丁 化 ， 用 ABCD 來 拼 寫 ， 這 一 點 沒 有 甚 麼 道 理 。 中 國 的 唐 詩 、 宋 詞 、 崑 曲 ， 都 是 知 識 分 子 優 美 的 藝 術 品 ， 與 醜 陋 的 帝 王 與 奴 民 無 緣 ， 而 且 越 南 、 古 巴 也 使 用 拉 丁 字 母 ， 卻 不 見 得 自 由 和 文 明 。
柏 楊 言 詞 直 率 ， 他 的 缺 點 是 身 為 中 國 人 ， 竟 然 說 了 幾 十 年 的 真 話 ， 因 此 他 的 文 字 有 時 未 免 像 高 舉 起 的 十 字 架 ， 引 起 吸 血 殭 屍 的 咆 哮 哀 嚎 。 因 為 他 活 在 一 個 苦 難 的 時 代 ， 因 言 論 而 獲 罪 重 囚 ， 是 一 個 從 地 獄 走 過 來 的 勇 者 ， 柏 楊 對 於 許 多 他 看 不 慣 的 事 ， 有 時 未 免 太 上 心 ， 這 一 點 似 乎 沒 有 必 要 。 「 好 的 孩 子 學 不 壞 ， 壞 的 孩 子 不 好 」 ， 柏 楊 先 生 的 情 感 太 澎 湃 了 ， 似 乎 欠 缺 一 點 洞 明 的 冷 靜 ， 何 況 從 佛 家 的 角 度 ， 一 個 民 族 的 思 想 和 行 為 ， 是 他 自 願 選 擇 的 一 種 共 業 。 例 如 ， 香 港 人 最 近 也 在 擁 抱 一 種 共 業 ： 在 互 聯 網 「 香 港 討 論 區 」 ， 香 港 的 中 國 憤 青 ， 也 發 起 了 向 香 港 大 學 的 異 見 女 學 生 陳 巧 文 的 姦 殺 令 ， 香 港 特 區 政 府 的 警 方 ， 聽 任 不 管 。 中 國 人 醜 不 醜 陋 ？ 香 港 人 在 五 十 萬 人 大 遊 行 的 時 候 ， 秩 序 井 然 ， 人 人 互 敬 互 助 ， 沒 有 暴 力 ， 那 時 候 一 點 也 不 醜 陋 。 醬 缸 效 應 長 久 發 酵 ， 以 後 很 難 說 。
中 國 式 的 醬 缸 行 為 ， 在 一 所 裝 修 過 的 戲 院 ， 不 必 換 電 影 海 報 ， 是 同 一 片 上 映 。
柏 楊 先 生 是 一 位 跨 世 紀 的 中 國 作 家 ， 他 的 離 開 ， 連 時 機 都 如 此 完 美 ， 他 是 一 位 對 世 界 文 明 有 卓 越 的 警 世 貢 獻 的 人 ， 中 國 的 醬 缸 ， 奇 異 地 保 存 了 柏 楊 作 品 主 題 永 不 過 時 的 新 鮮 感 。 時 間 將 會 證 明 他 的 偉 大 和 不 朽 。

Gone Baby Gone (2007)
A critically acclaimed crime drama directed by Ben Affleck and adapted by Affleck and Aaron Stockard. The movie is set in Boston and is based on the novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane. It stars Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan, two private investigators hunting for an abducted four-year-old girl in the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester.
The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported 93% of critics gave the film positive reviews.
